Description
Combination of aminopenicillin and penicillinase-resistant penicillin effective against a wide range of gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria.
Indications
Respiratory tract infections, urinary tract infections, skin and soft tissue infections, and other bacterial infections.

Pharmacology
Inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs).
Mechanism of action
Blocks peptidoglycan synthesis, causing bacterial cell lysis.
Dosage
Adults: 250 mg to 500 mg every 6 hours orally. Children: as directed by physician.
Administration
Taken on an empty stomach with a full glass of water.
Missed dose
Take as soon as remembered.
Side effects
Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, skin rash, allergic reactions.
Precautions & warnings
Use with caution in patients with history of penicillin hypersensitivity or renal impairment.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to penicillins or cephalosporins.
Drug interactions
Probenecid increases blood levels of ampicillin. Do not mix with aminoglycosides in IV fluids.
Food interactions
Absorption may be reduced by food; take on an empty stomach.
Use in pregnancy
Pregnancy Category B. Use during pregnancy if clearly needed.
Pregnancy Category: B — always consult a doctor before taking during pregnancy.
Use in lactation
Excreted in small amounts in breast milk; use with caution.
Pediatric use
Safe and effective in children based on weight.
Geriatric use
Adjust dosage based on renal function in elderly patients.
