Aztreonam inhalation

Aztreonam inhalation is an antibiotic used to prevent or treat a wide variety of bacterial infections. This may include infections of the urinary tract, blood, brain, ear, skin, and soft tissue, abdomen, bone, windpipe and lungs. Aztreonam inhalation is given as a drip (intravenous infusion) or as an injection directly into a vein or a muscle under the supervision of a healthcare professional. It should be used regularly at evenly spaced time intervals as prescribed by your doctor. Do not skip any doses and finish the full course of treatment even if you feel better. Stopping the medicine too early may lead to the infection returning or worsening. Rash, vomiting, nausea, and diarrhea may be seen as the most common side effects. Temporary pain, swelling, and redness at the injection site may also occur at the injection site. Consult your doctor if any of these side effects persist or if your condition does not improve despite treatment. Inform your doctor if you have any previous history of allergy or heart problems before taking this medicine. Pregnant or breastfeeding women should consult their doctor before using this medicine. Aztreonam inhalation is an antibiotic. It kills bacteria by preventing them from forming the bacterial protective covering (cell wall) which is needed for them to survive.

Inhibits cell wall synthesis by binding to penicillin binding protein 3, which in turn inhibits cell wall biosynthesis; member of monobactam family

Adult Dose: Cystic Fibrosis (CF) Indicated to improve respiratory symptoms in patients with CF infected with Pseudomonas aeruginosa 75 mg inhaled q8hr for 28 days; use only with Alterna nebulizer; do not repeat for 28 days after completion Doses should be administered at least 4 h apart Use bronchodilator before administration; administer short-acting beta agonists 15 min to 4 h before or long-acting beta agonists 30 min to 12 h before If taking mucolytics, take after bronchodilators, but before aztreonam Child Dose: Cystic Fibrosis (CF) Indicated to improve respiratory symptoms in patients with CF infected with Pseudomonas aeruginosa 7 years: As adults, 75 mg inhaled q8hr for 28 days; use only with Alterna nebulizer; do not repeat for 28 days after completion Doses should be administered at least 4 h apart

[SAFE] Aztreonam inhalation does not usually affect your ability to drive. You have been prescribed Aztreonam inhalation for the treatment of bacterial infections. It is given by an injection or drip into a vein or into a muscle in the buttock or thigh. Finish the prescribed course, even if you start to feel better. Stopping it early may make the infection come back and harder to treat. Diarrhea may occur as a side effect but should stop when your course is complete. Inform your doctor if it doesn't stop or if you find blood in your stools. Inform your doctor immediately if you develop an itchy rash, swelling of the face, throat or tongue or breathing difficulties while taking this medicine. Inform your doctor if you are pregnant, planning to conceive or breastfeeding.

Hypersensitivity

[SAFE] Consuming alcohol with Aztreonam inhalation does not cause any harmful side effects.

[SAFE IF PRESCRIBED] Aztreonam inhalation is generally considered safe to use during pregnancy. Animal studies have shown low or no adverse effects to the developing baby; however, there are limited human studies.

[SAFE IF PRESCRIBED] Aztreonam inhalation is safe to use during breastfeeding. Human studies suggest that the drug does not pass into the breastmilk in a significant amount and is not harmful to the baby.

[CAUTION] Aztreonam inhalation should be used with caution in patients with kidney disease. Dose adjustment of Aztreonam inhalation may be needed. Please consult your doctor. Regular monitoring of kidney function test is advised while you are taking this medicine. [SAFE IF PRESCRIBED] Aztreonam inhalation is probably safe to use in patients with liver disease. Limited data available suggests that dose adjustment of Aztreonam inhalation may not be needed in these patients. Please consult your doctor.
