Description
Dexamethasone (Vet), a Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drug (SAID), is a potent anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and anti-allergic agent. It stabilizes individual cells and their internal structures, preventing them from releasing compounds that cause or perpetuate the irritation, discomfort, and swelling known as inflammation. Dexamethasone (Vet) decreases the synthesis of prostaglandin (PG), interleukin (IL), and platelet activating factor (PAF) by blocking the cycloxyginase and lipoxyginase pathways of the inflammatory process. Dexamethasone (Vet)is a steroid with varying effects on the body based on the dosage and treatment strategy. At lower doses, Dexamethasone (Vet) decreases inflammation and can be used to replace other bodily steroids. Dexamethasone (Vet), in larger doses, can suppress the immune system. _Dexamethasone (Vet) is also commonly used as an injection in hospitals to treat severe allergic reactions, Addisonian crises, specific head or spine injuries, and shock. The veterinary physician will select and prescribe the appropriate dose for the animal based on its medical condition.
Indications
Use Dexamethasone (Vet) to treat Inflammatory and autoimmune disorders.
Mechanism of action
Dexamethasone is a potent anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive agent. It works by binding to glucocorticoid receptors, which then modulate the expression of genes involved in inflammation and immune responses.
Administration
Take Dexamethasone (Vet) in the dose and duration as advised by Registered Veterinary Physician.
Side effects
The immune system may be suppressed. There is a possibility of muscle weakening.
Precautions & warnings
Dexamethasone dosing can vary significantly across different animal species. Careful dose titration and monitoring are essential to avoid adverse effects.Animals receiving Dexamethasone solution should be under close observation, as it may induce the first stage of parturition when administered during the last trimester of pregnancy, and may precipitate parturition followed by dystocia, fetal death, retained placenta and metritis.
Contraindications
Do not give to animals who are hypersensitive to dexamethasone.
Drug interactions
Dexamethasone may interact with a variety of different drugs. Most significantly, dexamethasone and other steroids can interact with nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications. These drugs, when used simultaneously, may cause serious adverse effects.
