Description
Doxazosin belongs to a class of medicines called as alpha-blocker. It is used to treat high blood pressure and lower your risk of having a heart attack or stroke. It may also be used to treat heart failure and mild enlargement of the prostate gland in men (benign prostatic hyperplasia). Doxazosin may be prescribed alone or in combination with other medicines. It can be taken with or without food. The dose will depend on your condition and how you respond to the medicine. Follow the advice of your doctor on what is right for you. You need to use this medicine regularly to get the most benefit from it so keep taking it even if you feel well. High blood pressure does not usually have symptoms. If you stop taking it, your blood pressure may rise and put you at risk of heart attack or stroke. You may need to take it for the rest of your life. The most common side effects of this medicine include dizziness, drowsiness, headache, nausea and unusual beating of the heart (palpitations). Most side effects disappear when you get used to the medicine. If they bother you or won't go away, talk to your doctor. To lower the chance of dizziness, rise slowly if you have been sitting or lying down. It may also cause your blood pressure to go too low. Some side effects may be serious and need urgent medical attention. Your doctor may be able to help with ways of preventing or reducing side effects. If you are pregnant, thinking about becoming pregnant or breastfeeding, ask your doctor before using this medicine. Also talk to your doctor before taking it if have heart failure, liver disease or kidney disease and if you are having eye surgery for a cataract. Your blood pressure will need to be checked regularly while using this medicine. Doxazosin is an alpha-blocker. It lowers blood pressure by relaxing blood vessels. It also relaxes the muscles around the bladder exit and prostate, which makes it easier to urinate.

Mechanism of action
Hypertension: Blocks postsynaptic alpha1 receptors; alpha blockade causes arterial, arteriolar, and venous dilation; decreases total peripheral resistance and blood pressure Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH): Blocks alpha1 receptors in prostatic stromal and bladder tissues; reduces sympathetic tone-induced urethral stricture responsible for BPH symptoms
Dosage
Adult Dose: Oral Hypertension Adult: Initially, 1 mg at bedtime, may be doubled at 1-2 wk intervals according to response. Maintenance: Up to 4 mg once daily. Max: 16 mg/day. Extended-release: Initially, 4 mg once daily, may increase to max 8 mg once daily after 4 wk. Benign prostatic hyperplasia Adult: Initially, 1 mg at bedtime, may be doubled at 1-2 wk intervals according to response. Maintenance: 2-4 mg/day. Max: 8 mg/day. Extended-release: Initially, 4 mg once daily, may increase to max 8 mg once daily after 4 wk. Hepatic impairment: Use with caution in mild-to-moderate hepatic dysfunction; do not use in severe impairment
Administration
Take this medicine in the dose and duration as advised by your doctor. Swallow it as a whole. Do not chew, crush or break it. Doxazosin may be taken with or without food, but it is better to take it at a fixed time.
Missed dose
If you miss a dose of Doxazosin, skip it and continue with your normal schedule. Do not double the dose.

Precautions & warnings
[UNSAFE] Doxazosin may decrease alertness, affect your vision or make you feel sleepy and dizzy. Do not drive if these symptoms occur. It may cause sudden drop in your blood pressure, especially when you first start taking this medicine. To lower the chance of feeling dizzy or passing out, rise slowly if you have been sitting or lying down. Do not consume alcohol while taking Doxazosin as it may enhance the blood pressure lowering effect of this medicine causing increased dizziness. Be cautious while driving or doing anything that requires concentration as it can cause dizziness and sleepiness. Inform your doctor that you are taking Doxazosin if you are scheduled for a cataract surgery.
Contraindications
Patient w/ history of orthostatic hypotension; benign prostatic hyperplasia and concomitant congestion of the upper urinary tract, chronic urinary tract infection or bladder stones; monotherapy in patients w/ either overflow bladder or anuria w/ or w/o progressive renal insufficiency.
Drug interactions
Concomitant admin w/ phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE-5) inhibitors (e.g. sildenafil) may lead to symptomatic hypotension. Potentiates the BP lowering activity of other α-blockers and other antihypertensives.
Food interactions
[UNSAFE] Doxazosin may cause excessive drowsiness with alcohol.
Use in pregnancy
[CONSULT YOUR DOCTOR] Doxazosin may be unsafe to use during pregnancy. Although there are limited studies in humans, animal studies have shown harmful effects on the developing baby. Your doctor will weigh the benefits and any potential risks before prescribing it to you. Please consult your doctor.
Use in lactation
[CONSULT YOUR DOCTOR] Doxazosin is probably unsafe to use during breastfeeding. Limited human data suggests that the drug may pass into the breastmilk and harm the baby.
Renal / hepatic impairment
[SAFE IF PRESCRIBED] Doxazosin is safe to use in patients with kidney disease. No dose adjustment of Doxazosin is recommended. However, talk to your doctor if you have any underlying kidney disease. [CAUTION] Doxazosin should be used with caution in patients with liver disease. Dose adjustment of Doxazosin may be needed. Please consult your doctor. Use of Doxazosin is not recommended in patients with severe liver disease.
