Metronidazole (Vet)

Metronidazole (Vet)is a potent antibiotic and antibacterial medicine that veterinarians frequently prescribe for anaerobic bacterial infections, protozoal (parasitic) infections, and non-specific inflammatory disorders of the stomach and large intestines in dogs and cats. Metronidazole (Vet) is used to treat protozoal infections in dogs and cats, particularly those that cause diarrhea, such as giardiasis, entamoeba, trichomonas foetus (TTF), and balantidium, as well as anaerobic bacteria. Metronidazole (Vet) has immune-modulating properties and can be used to treat canine inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and colitis caused by other antibiotics. Metronidazole (Vet) is bactericidal, meaning it kills infectious bacteria by breaking their DNA and inhibiting repair enzymes in cells that inhabit anaerobic (unoxygenated) settings, resulting in bacterial cell death.

Metronidazole (Vet) is an antibiotic and antiprotozoal drug used to treat bacterial and parasite infections in a variety of animal species.

Metronidazole kills bacteria by breaking their DNA. It is unknown how metronidazole and other drugs in the 5-nitroimidazole drug class kill protozoa, although it is believed that they produce free radicals that break the protozoa's DNA. Metronidazole is also used to treat inflammatory illnesses of the digestive system, where it is hypothesized to work by inhibiting certain inflammatory pathways.

Metronidazole is usually well tolerated in animals. Side effects could include: Vomiting or diarrhea. Fatigue (Lethargy), Weakness, Low white blood cell numbers, Blood in the Urine Loss of appetite, Yellowing of the gums, skin, and whites of the eyes.

This bolus should not be used on young puppies and kittens. This bolus should be avoided or handled with caution and at decreased doses in animals with kidney or liver problems.

The medicine should not be administered to animals who are hypersensitive to its active ingredients.

Metronidazole has been shown to prolong prothrombin time in animals taking warfarin or other coumarin anticoagulants. Metronidazole may raise cyclosporine amounts in the bloodstream. Phenobarbital and phenytoin may speed up the metabolism of metronidazole, resulting in lower therapeutic levels. Supplements, flea treatments, and chemotherapy drugs may all interact with metronidazole. Consult your veterinarian about all of the medications and supplements your dog is receiving.
