Description

Micafungin is an antifungal medication. It is used in the treatment of severe fungal infections. It kills the fungi that cause infections and thus provides relief. Micafungin is administered as an injection by a healthcare professional. Kindly do not self administer. Do not skip any doses and finish the full course of treatment even if you feel better. Your liver function should be monitored regularly during treatment. It may lead to a few common side effects like rash, headache, nausea, vomiting, and increased liver enzymes. You may also notice some injection site reactions like pain, swelling or redness. Inform your doctor if these side effects persist for a longer duration. Please consult your doctor if you are pregnant, planning to conceive or breastfeeding. Micafungin kills fungus by preventing them from making their protective covering.

Mechanism of action

Micafungin prevents the synthesis of 1,3-β-D-glucan, an essential fungal cell wall component, by non-competitively inhibiting 1,3-β-D-glucan synthase. Decreased glucan content results in osmotic instability and cellular lysis.

Dosage

Adult Dose: Intravenos Candidiasis Treatment (esophageal): 150 mg/day IV infusion x10-30 days (mean 15 days) Prophylaxis in hematopoietic stem cell transfer (HSCT) patients: 50 mg/day IV infusion x6-51 days (mean 19 days) Candidemia, Disseminated Candidiasis, Candida Peritonitis & Abscesses 100 mg/day IV infusion x10-47 days (mean 15 days)us Child Dose: Candida Infections Indicated for candidemia, acute disseminated candidiasis, Candida peritonitis and abscesses, esophageal candidiasis, and prophylaxis of Candida infections in hematopoietic stem cell transplants (HSCT) recipients 4 months: See specific Candida infection below Treatment of Candidemia, acute disseminated candidiasis, Candida peritonitis and abscesses 2 mg/kg IV qDay; not to exceed 100 mg/day Treatment of esophageal candidiasis 30 kg: 2.5 mg/kg IV qDay; not to exceed 150 mg/day Prophylaxis of Candida infections in HSCT recipients 1 mg/kg IV qDay; not to exceed 50 mg/day

Side effects

Common: • Decreased potassium level in blood • Decreased white blood cell count • Diarrhea • Facial swelling • Fever • Headache • Low blood platelets • Nausea • Rash • Vascular dilatation • Vomiting

Precautions & warnings

[CONSULT YOUR DOCTOR] It is not known whether Micafungin alters the ability to drive. Do not drive if you experience any symptoms that affect your ability to concentrate and react. Micafungin is given as an injection into vein under the supervision of a doctor. It might make you feel dizzy. If this happens, avoid driving or operating on machinery. Your doctor may get regular blood tests done to monitor your blood cell counts and liver function during treatment with this medicine. Inform your doctor if you are pregnant, planning pregnancy or breastfeeding.

Drug interactions

May increase exposure of amphotericin B desoxycholate, sirolimus, nifedipine, itraconazole.

Food interactions

Use in pregnancy

Use in lactation

[SAFE IF PRESCRIBED] Micafungin is probably safe to use during breastfeeding. Limited human data suggests that the drug does not represent any significant risk to the baby.

Renal / hepatic impairment

[SAFE IF PRESCRIBED] Micafungin is safe to use in patients with kidney disease. No dose adjustment of Micafungin is recommended. However, inform your doctor if you have an underlying kidney disease. Regular monitoring of kidney function tests may be required. [CAUTION] Micafungin should be used with caution in patients with liver disease. Dose adjustment of Micafungin may be needed.
