Nevirapine

Nevirapine belongs to a group of medicines called antiretrovirals. It is used to treat HIV (human immunodeficiency virus), the virus that can cause AIDS (acquired immunodeficiency syndrome). It helps to control HIV infection so your immune system can work better. Nevirapine reduces the chances of getting HIV-related complications and improves your lifespan. It can be taken empty stomach or with food and is prescribed in combination with other HIV medicines. Taking all these medicines regularly at the right times greatly increases their effectiveness and reduces the chances of HIV becoming resistant to them. It is important to keep taking them regularly until your doctor tells you it is safe to stop. Common side effects of this medicine include headache, nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, fatigue, diarrhea, and rash. These are usually not serious but tell your doctor if they bother you or do not go away. Consult your doctor urgently if you experience a skin reaction or liver damage. Before taking it, tell your doctor if you have any skin, liver or kidney problems. While using it, you may need regular blood tests to check your blood cell counts and liver function. Avoid drinking alcohol as it may increase your risk of liver damage. Pregnant or breastfeeding mothers should consult their doctor before using this medicine. Do not have unprotected sex or share personal items like razors or toothbrushes, if you are HIV positive. Talk to your doctor about safe ways like condoms to prevent HIV transmission during sex. Nevirapine prevents the multiplication of HIV virus in human cells, thereby stopping the HIV virus from producing new viruses.

• HIV infection

Nevirapine is a non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor that acts against HIV-1. It binds directly to reverse transcriptase and thereby blocks the RNA-dependent and DNA-dependent DNA polymerase activities by disrupting the enzyme's catalytic site.

Adult Dose: Oral HIV infection Adult: Combined with other antiretrovirals: 200 mg once daily for the first 14 days; increase to 200 mg bid if rash does not develop. Interrupting the treatment for >7 days necessitate reintroduction at a lower dose for the first 14 days. Child Dose: Oral HIV infection Child: Combined with other antiretrovirals: 2 mth to 8 yr: 4 mg/kg once daily for the first 14 days; increase to 7 mg/kg bid if no rash is present. 8-16 yr: 4 mg/kg once daily for 14 days followed by 4 mg/kg bid. Max: 400 mg daily. Interrupting the treatment for >7 days necessitate reintroduction at a lower dose for the first 14 days. Renal Dose: Renal impairment: Haemodialysis: A further 200-mg dose is recommended after dialysis.

Take this medicine in the dose and duration as advised by your doctor. Swallow it as a whole. Do not chew, crush or break it. Nevirapine may be taken with or without food, but it is better to take it at a fixed time.

[UNSAFE] Nevirapine may cause side effects which could affect your ability to drive. You may experience fatigue while taking Nevirapine and this may affect your ability to drive. You have been prescribed Nevirapine for the treatment of HIV (human immunodeficiency virus). Take it as per dose and duration suggested by your doctor. If you miss a dose for more than 7 days, consult your doctor as dose modification may be required. You might notice skin reactions during the first 2 weeks of treatment. Inform your doctor if you notice a fever, swelling of face, mouth sores, blistering of skin and trouble breathing. Your doctor may check your liver function regularly for a period of 18 weeks. Inform your doctor if you notice yellowing of eyes or skin, dark urine or stomach pain. It makes birth control pills less effective in nature. Ask your doctor about other suitable methods of preventing pregnancy.

Hypersensitivity. Lactation. Severe hepatic impairment.

Mutually increased levels effects when used with drugs extensively metabolised by CYP3A. Reduced levels/effects of methadone.

[CAUTION] Caution is advised when consuming alcohol with Nevirapine. Please consult your doctor.

[SAFE IF PRESCRIBED] Nevirapine is generally considered safe to use during pregnancy. Animal studies have shown low or no adverse effects to the developing baby; however, there are limited human studies.

[SAFE IF PRESCRIBED] Nevirapine is probably safe to use during breastfeeding. Limited human data suggests that the drug does not represent any significant risk to the baby.

[SAFE IF PRESCRIBED] Nevirapine is safe to use in patients with kidney disease. No dose adjustment of Nevirapine is recommended. However, inform your doctor if you have any underlying kidney disease. [CAUTION] Nevirapine should be used with caution in patients with liver disease. Dose adjustment of Nevirapine may be needed. Please consult your doctor. Use of Nevirapine is not recommended in patients with moderate to severe liver disease. Regular monitoring of liver function tests is advised while you are taking this medicine.
