Piperazine Citrate

Piperazine Citrate is an anti-helminitic medication. It is used in the treatment of worm infections. It works by killing the worms that cause infection. The killed worms are then passed in the stool. Piperazine Citrate should be used in the dose and duration as advised by your doctor. It should be taken with food, preferably at a fixed time. Avoid skipping any doses and finish the full course of treatment even if you feel better. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed dose. Simply take the next dose as planned. Some people may experience nausea, headache, vomiting, and dizziness as the side effects of this medicine. Please consult your doctor if these side effects do not resolve or persist for a longer duration. You may be monitored with blood tests and liver function tests throughout your treatment. Piperazine belongs to class of drugs called anthelmintic. It works by paralyzing the worms and making them to pass in the stool. It is effective against the intestinal nematodes roundworm (Ascaris lumbricoides), pinworm and threadworm (Enterobius vermicularis). Piperazine produces a neuromuscular block leads to muscle paralysis of the worms which are consequently dislodged and expelled in the faeces.

Adult Dose: Oral Ascariasis Adult: 4.5 g as a single dose repeated once after 14 days. Alternatively, may be given as a preparation with senna in a single dose of 4 g of the phosphate, repeat dose mthly for up to 3 mth if needed; same dosage regimen may also be used to prevent ascariasis. Enterobiasis Adult: 2.25 g once daily for 7 days, 2nd course may be repeated after an interval of 7 days. Alternatively, may be given as a preparation with senna in a single dose of 4 g of the phosphate, repeat dose after 14 days. Child Dose: Oral Ascariasis Child: As a single dose, repeated once after 14 days. 12 yr: same as adult dose. To be taken once daily for 7 days, 2nd course may be repeated after an interval of 7 days. Alternatively, for children >6 yr: May be given as a preparation with senna in a single dose of 4 g of the phosphate; repeat dose after 14 days.

Take this medicine in the dose and duration as advised by your doctor. Check the label for directions before use. Measure it with a measuring cup and take it by mouth. Shake well before use. Piperazine Citrate may be taken with or without food, but it is better to take it at a fixed time.

You have been prescribed Piperazine Citrate to treat a variety of parasitic worm infections. It should be taken with food. If you are unable to swallow the whole tablet, it may be crushed or chewed and swallowed with a full glass of water. It can be harmful to an unborn baby. Do not take it during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Use birth control measures to prevent pregnancy while taking Piperazine Citrate. Your doctor may monitor your blood counts and liver function before you start taking this medicine and regularly throughout your treatment. Avoid being near people who are sick or have infections. Inform your doctor if you develop signs of infection. Do not skip doses and finish the prescribed course, even if you start to feel better. Stopping it early may increase your risk of further infection.

Severe renal impairment, epilepsy. Pregnancy.

Antagonism if pyrantel and piperazine are used together. Piperazine may potentiate extrapyramidal effects of chlorpromazine and other phenothiazines.
