Description
Praziquantel is an anti-helminitic medication. It is used in the treatment of worm infections and Schistosoma infection. It works by killing the worms that cause infection and thus, treats your infection. Praziquantel should be used in the dose and duration as advised by your doctor. It should be taken with food, preferably at a fixed time. Avoid skipping any doses and finish the full course of treatment even if you feel better. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed dose. Simply take the next dose as planned. Some people may experience headache, nausea, vomiting, abnormal liver function tests and hair loss as the side effects of this medicine. Please consult your doctor if these do not resolve or persist for a longer duration. You may be monitored with blood tests and liver function tests throughout your treatment. .

Mechanism of action
Praziquantel is a pyrazinoisoquinoline anthelmintic agent w/ a broad spectrum of activity against trematodes (flukes) and cestodes (tapeworms). It increases the cell permeability to Ca in schistosomes, causing strong contractions and paralysis of worm musculature leading to detachment of suckers from the blood vessel walls and to dislodgement.
Dosage
Adult Dose: Oral Schistosomiasis Indicated for treatment for schistosomiasis caused by all species of Schistosoma 20 mg/kg PO TID for 1 day (at intervals of 4-6 hr) Clonorchiasis, Opisthorchiasis Indicated for clonorchiasis and opisthorchiasis caused by liver flukes (Clonorchis sinensis, Opisthorchis viverrini) 25 mg/kg PO TID for 1 day (at intervals of 4-6 hr) Child Dose: Schistosomiasis Indicated for treatment for schistosomiasis caused by all species of Schistosoma 1 year: 20 mg/kg PO TID for 1 day (at intervals of 4-6 hr) Clonorchiasis, Opisthorchiasis Indicated for clonorchiasis and opisthorchiasis caused by liver flukes (Clonorchis sinensis, Opisthorchis viverrini) 1 year: 25 mg/kg PO TID for 1 day (at intervals of 4-6 hr)
Administration
Take this medicine in the dose and duration as advised by your doctor. Swallow it as a whole. Do not chew, crush or break it. Praziquantel is to be taken with food.

Precautions & warnings
[UNSAFE] Praziquantel may cause side effects which could affect your ability to drive. You have been prescribed Praziquantel to treat a variety of parasitic worm infections. It should be taken with food. If you are unable to swallow the whole tablet, it may be crushed or chewed and swallowed with a full glass of water. It can be harmful to an unborn baby. Do not take it during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Use birth control measures to prevent pregnancy while taking Praziquantel. Your doctor may monitor your blood counts and liver function before you start taking this medicine and regularly throughout your treatment. Avoid being near people who are sick or have infections. Inform your doctor if you develop signs of infection. Do not skip doses and finish the prescribed course, even if you start to feel better. Stopping it early may increase your risk of further infection.
Contraindications
Ocular cysticercosis. Concomitant admin of strong CYP inducers (e.g. rifampicin). Lactation.
Drug interactions
Headache, drowsiness, dizziness, malaise, abdominal discomfort, anorexia, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, urticaria, rash, fever, asthenia, malaise, fatigue, myalgia. Rarely, seizures, eosinophilia, pruritus, raised liver enzyme values.
Food interactions

Use in pregnancy
[SAFE IF PRESCRIBED] Praziquantel is generally considered safe to use during pregnancy. Animal studies have shown low or no adverse effects to the developing baby; however, there are limited human studies.
Use in lactation
[SAFE IF PRESCRIBED] Praziquantel is probably safe to use during breastfeeding. Limited human data suggests that the drug does not represent any significant risk to the baby. To minimize the exposure of the medicine to the baby, Praziquantel can be taken just before the baby's longest sleep period.
Renal / hepatic impairment
[SAFE IF PRESCRIBED] Praziquantel is probably safe to use in patients with kidney disease. Limited data available suggests that dose adjustment of Praziquantel may not be needed in these patients.
