Procainamide

Procainamide is a medicine used to treat certain types of arrhythmia (abnormal heart rhythm). It restores normal heart rhythm by blocking abnormal electrical signals in the heart. This helps to maintain a regular and steady heartbeat. Procainamide should be taken regularly as advised by the doctor. You may take it with or without food and at a fixed time. This medicine should not be stopped abruptly without consulting the doctor as this can worsen your condition. Regular follow-up with your doctor is advised while using this medicine. Side effects like dizziness, blurred vision, headache, nausea, and vomiting can be seen in some patients. Your doctor may advise for regular monitoring of liver and kidney function while you are taking this medicine. This medicine may not be suitable for some people. This medicine is not usually recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding, so always consult your doctor before taking it. Procainamide is an anti-arrhythmic medication. Procainamide directly interferes with depolarization of the cell membrane by blocking the fast inward current of Na into cardiac cells. It slows the rate of change of the depolarization phase of the action potential, moderately prolong the PR, QRS and QT intervals on ECG monitoring. It also has local anesthetic properties.

Take this medicine in the dose and duration as advised by your doctor. Swallow it as a whole. Do not chew, crush or break it. Procainamide may be taken with or without food, but it is better to take it at a fixed time.

If you miss a dose of Procainamide, skip it and continue with your normal schedule. Do not double the dose.

Your doctor may regularly monitor blood sugar level while taking this medicine. Inform your doctor if you experience slow or fast heart rate, chest pain, shortness of breath. Inform your doctor if you are pregnant or planning to conceive or breastfeeding. Do not stop taking medication suddenly without talking to your doctor.

Heart block, SLE, heart failure, hypotension, myasthenia gravis, digoxin toxicity, lactation.

May enhance effects of antihypertensives, other antiarrhythmics, antimuscarinics and neuromuscular-blocking drugs and diminish those of parasympathomimetics. Increased clearance when used with alcohol. Increased plasma concentrations and toxicity of procainamide when used with trimethoprim. Potentially Fatal: Increased risk of arrhythmias with terfenadine and antipsychotics that prolong QT interval.
