Roxatidine

Roxatidine is an antacid medicine. It reduces the excess amount of acid made by your stomach. It is used to treat and prevent heartburn, indigestion and other symptoms caused by too much acid in the stomach. It is also used to treat and prevent stomach ulcers, reflux disease, and some rarer conditions. Roxatidine is also commonly prescribed to prevent stomach ulcers and heartburn caused due to the use of pain killers. It must be swallowed whole with water before or after a meal. The medicine must be taken in dose and duration advised by the doctor. This medicine should relieve indigestion and heartburn within a few hours. If the symptoms persist or get worse even after 14 days of treatment, you should consult your doctor immediately. Do not take this medicine in severe stomach disease. You can help the medicine work better by eating smaller meals more often and avoiding spicy or oily foods. Most people who take it do not have any side effects, but the most common include fatigue, drowsiness, headache, constipation, diarrhea and muscle pain. If you do get a side effect, it is usually mild and will go away when you stop taking this medicine or as you adjust to it. Consult your doctor if any of these side effects bother you or do not go away. Before taking it, you should tell your doctor if you have any kidney or liver diseases so that your doctor can prescribe a suitable dose for you. Also, tell your doctor if you are taking other medications. This medicine is usually considered safe to take during pregnancy and breastfeeding if it has been prescribed by a doctor. Avoid drinking alcohol as this can increase the amount of acid in your stomach and make your symptoms worse. Roxatidine is a histamine H2 receptor antagonist. It works by reducing the acid produced in the stomach which helps in relief of acid-related indigestion and heartburn.

Roxatidine is a potent and selective inhibitor of basal and stimulated gastric acid secretion through competitive blockade of H2-receptors. Total pepsin secretion is reduced in a dose-dependent manner. There is an independent mucosal protection action.

Adult Dose: Oral Peptic ulcer Adult: 150 mg at bedtime or 75 mg bid daily for 4-6 wk. Maintenance: 75 mg at bedtime. Gastro-oesophageal reflux disease Adult: 75 mg bid or 150 mg at bedtime for 6-8 wk. Gastritis Adult: 75 mg once daily in the evening. Zollinger-Ellison syndrome Adult: 75 mg bid. Premedication before anaesthesia Adult: 75 mg in the evening on the day before surgery and repeated 2 hr before induction of anaesthesia. Alternatively, 150 mg once on the night before surgery. Intravenous Upper gastrointestinal haemorrhage Adult: 75 mg bid via slow inj or infusion. Renal Dose: Renal impairment: CrCl (ml/min) Dosage Recommendation 20-50 75 mg at bedtime. <20 75 mg every 2 days.

Take this medicine in the dose and duration as advised by your doctor. Swallow it as a whole. Do not chew, crush or break it. Roxatidine may be taken with or without food, but it is better to take it at a fixed time.

If you miss a dose of Roxatidine, take it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular schedule. Do not double the dose.

[CONSULT YOUR DOCTOR] It is not known whether Roxatidine alters the ability to drive. Do not drive if you experience any symptoms that affect your ability to concentrate and react. Take Roxatidine before going to bed if you are taking this medicine once a day. It is very effective in controlling stomach acid that is released when you are asleep. If you are also taking other medications to treat acidity (e.g., antacid), take them 2 hours before or after taking Roxatidine. Avoid taking soft drinks, citrus fruits like orange and lemon, which can irritate the stomach and increase acid secretion. Inform your doctor if you do not feel better after taking Roxatidine for 2 weeks as you may be suffering from some other problems. Inform your doctor if you have ever been diagnosed with kidney disease as dose of your medicine may need to be adjusted. Do not stop taking the medication without talking to your doctor.

Lactation. Porphyria.

May affect serum levels of protease inhibitors.
