Betamethasone 0.05% + Gentamicin 0.1% E/E prep is a prescription medicine having a combination of medicines that is used to treat skin infections. It inhibits the growth of bacteria that cause infections and reduce the redness, swelling, and itchiness due to infections. Betamethasone 0.05% + Gentamicin 0.1% E/E prep is for external use only. Use it in the dose and duration as advised by the doctor. Do not apply it on an open wound and avoid getting it into your eyes or mouth. In case of accidental contact, rinse it with plenty of water. Use it regularly to get the most benefit of the medicine. Using $may cause few side effects like burning sensation and skin irritation. These are temporary and in most cases resolve with time. If the irritation persists or worsens, inform your doctor. Betamethasone 0.05% + Gentamicin 0.1% E/E prep is a prescription medicine having a combination of medicines that is used to treat skin infections. It inhibits the growth of bacteria that cause infections and reduce the redness, swelling, and itchiness due to infections. Betamethasone 0.05% + Gentamicin 0.1% E/E prep is also widely used in hospitalized patients to prevent infections. It works by stopping the growth of bacteria. It is given as a drip (intravenous infusion) or as an injection directly into a vein or a muscle under the supervision of a healthcare professional. Your doctor may shift you to another antibiotic after culture reports become available. It should be used regularly at evenly spaced time intervals as prescribed by your doctor. Do not skip any doses and finish the full course of treatment even if you feel better. Stopping the medicine too early may lead to the infection returning or worsening. Betamethasone 0.05% + Gentamicin 0.1% E/E prep may lead to nausea or vomiting, balance disorder (loss of balance), kidney damage and hearing loss as side effects in some patients. Therefore, please follow all the instructions given by your doctor while using this medicine. Your doctor may monitor you with regular kidney function tests or hearing tests during treatment. Some patients may also be advised to get blood levels of this medicine measured. This medication is not recommended for use during pregnancy. Inform your doctor if you are pregnant, planning to conceive, or breastfeeding. Betamethasone 0.05% + Gentamicin 0.1% E/E prep is a steroid which works by blocking the production of certain chemical messengers in the body that cause inflammation (redness and swelling) and allergies. Betamethasone 0.05% + Gentamicin 0.1% E/E prep is an antibiotic. It stops bacterial growth by preventing synthesis of essential proteins required by bacteria to carry out vital functions.

Mechanism of action

Betamethasone is a corticosteroid that has anti-inflammatory activity. Gentamicin is an aminoglycoside that has broad spectrum bactericidal activity; it is active against a wide variety of pathogenic gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria.

Dosage

Adult Dose: Adult: Ophth Ocular inflammation with suspected or confirmed bacterial infection As soln containing gentamicin 0.3% and betamethasone 0.1%: Instill 2 drops 3-4 times/day; acute stage: 2 drops 2 hrly. Per g oint contains gentamicin 3 mg and betamethasone 1 mg: Apply ¼ inch 3-4 times/day. Otic Otic inflammation w/ suspected or confirmed bacterial infection As soln containing gentamicin 0.3% and betamethasone 0.1%: Instill 3-4 drops 3 times/day. Child Dose: Safety and efficacy have not been established in children <8 yr.

Betamethasone can make it harder for you to fight off infections. Notify your doctor if you have any signs of infection such as a fever or sore throat. Side effects such as mood changes or stomach problems can happen when you start taking Betamethasone. Inform your doctor if this bothers you. Do not stop taking Betamethasone suddenly without talking to your doctor first as it may worsen your symptoms. Your doctor has prescribed Gentamicin to cure your infection and improve your symptoms. Do not skip any doses and finish the full course of treatment even if you feel better. Stopping it early may make the infection to come back and harder to treat. It is given as a drip (intravenous infusion) or as an injection directly into a vein or a muscle. Use caution while driving or doing anything that requires concentration as Gentamicin may cause dizziness. Your doctor may get regular blood, urine, or hearing tests while you are on this medication. Your doctor will ensure that you are well hydrated before and during treatment with this medicine. Inform your doctor if you are pregnant, planning to conceive, or breastfeeding. Discontinue Gentamicin and inform your doctor immediately if you get a rash, itchy skin, swelling of face and mouth, or have difficulty in breathing.

Contraindications

Hypersensitivity. Ophthalmic preparations should not be used in epithelial herpes simplex keratitis (dendritic keratitis), varicella, and many other viral diseases of the cornea and conjunctiva, mycobacterial infections of the eye, trachoma, fungal diseases of ocular structures. Not to be used after removal of a corneal foreign body or in the presence of acute local viral lesions e.g. herpes, and in patients with absent or perforated tympanic membranes.
