Description

Dalfampridine is used in the treatment of multiple sclerosis (MS). It helps to improve walking ability in people with multiple sclerosis. Dalfampridine must be taken in a dose and duration as per the prescription. It can be taken with or without food but make sure to take it at about the same time every day. An overdose of this medicine may have serious side effects on the body. The common side effects of this medicine are constipation, indigestion, urinary tract infection, sleeplessness, dizziness, headache, nausea, weakness, back pain, balance disorder, etc. If any of the side effects persist or bother you, consult the doctor immediately. Inform the doctor immediately if you experience any allergic reactions such as rash, shortness of breath, coughing, swelling, etc. Before taking this medicine, it is important to consult your doctor if you have any ongoing medication for any underlying disease. Pregnant and breastfeeding women must inform the doctor prior to the initiation of this treatment. During the treatment, your doctor may advise you for some laboratory tests to know the effects of the medicine in the body. Dalfampridine is a potassium channel blocker. It works by strengthening the communication between nerves and muscles. This results in improved muscle activity – in this case, walking – in people with multiple sclerosis.

Dosage

Adult Dose: Multiple Sclerosis Indicated to improve walking in patients with multiple sclerosis by increasing walking speed 10 mg PO bid with or without food; take doses 12 hr apart Extended-release tablet; swallow tablet whole and do not chew, crush, divide, or dissolve tablets Hepatic impairment Not studied, but not expected to change dosing recommendations (primarily renal excretion) Child Dose: <18 years: Safety and efficacy not established Renal Dose: Renal impairment Moderate-to-severe (CrCl ?50 mL/min): Contraindicated due to increased risk of seizures Mild (CrCl 51-80 mL/min): Risk of seizure unknown, but plasma levels may be similar to levels of 15 mg PO bid, a dose that is possibly associated with increased seizure risk

Administration

Take this medicine in the dose and duration as advised by your doctor. Swallow it as a whole. Do not chew, crush or break it. Dalfampridine is to be taken empty stomach.
