Demeclocycline Hydrochloride

Demeclocycline Hydrochloride is an antibiotic medicine used to treat bacterial infections in your body. It kills bacteria, which helps to improve your symptoms and cure the infection. This medicine is effective in some sexually transmitted diseases as well. Demeclocycline Hydrochloride also helps to correct the low sodium levels seen in a condition known as SIADH (syndrome of inappropriate secretion of antidiuretic hormone). It should be taken empty stomach. You should take it regularly at evenly spaced intervals as per the schedule prescribed by your doctor. Taking it at the same time every day will help you to remember to take it. The dose will depend on what you are being treated for, but you should always complete a full course of this antibiotic as prescribed by your doctor. Do not stop taking it until you have finished, even when you feel better. If you stop taking it early, some bacteria may survive and the infection may come back. Commonly seen side effects seen with this medicine include skin reaction on exposure to sunlight (photosensitivity), vomiting, nausea and diarrhea. Avoid excessive sun exposure and use sunscreen and protective clothing when outdoors. These are usually temporary and subside with the completion of treatment. Consult your doctor if you find these side effects bother or worry you. Inform your doctor if you have any previous history of allergy to any antibiotic or any liver or kidney problems before taking this medicine. You should also let your doctor know all other medicines you are taking as they may affect, or be affected by this medicine. Pregnant or breastfeeding women should consult their doctor before using it. It may blur your vision or make you feel sleepy and dizzy. Do not drive if these symptoms occur. Demeclocycline Hydrochloride is an antibiotic. It stops bacterial growth by preventing synthesis of essential proteins required by bacteria to carry out vital functions.

• Bacterial infections

Demeclocycline inhibits protein synthesis by binding w/ the 30S and possibly the 50S ribosomal subunits of susceptible bacteria. It may also cause alterations in the cytoplasmic membrane. It inhibits the action of antidiuretic hormone (ADH) in patients w/ chronic syndrome of inappropriate antidiuretic hormone secretion (SIADH).

Adult Dose: Oral Susceptible infections Adult: 600 mg daily in 2 or 4 divided doses. Atypical pneumonia Adult: 900 mg daily in 3 divided doses for 6 days. Chronic hyponatraemia associated with syndrome of inappropriate antidiuretic hormone secretion (SIADH) Adult: Initially, 900-1,200 mg daily in divided doses. Maintenance: 600-900 mg daily in divided doses. Hepatic impairment: Max: 1 g daily. Child Dose: Child: Not recommended for childn <12 yr.

Take this medicine in the dose and duration as advised by your doctor. Swallow it as a whole. Do not chew, crush or break it. Demeclocycline Hydrochloride is to be taken empty stomach.

Demeclocycline Hydrochloride can cause headaches, dizziness, and disturbances in vision and rarely, with hearing and this may affect your ability to drive. Your doctor has prescribed Demeclocycline Hydrochloride to cure your infection and improve symptoms. It should be taken on an empty stomach, with plenty of water, while you are sitting or standing to prevent any throat irritation. Do not skip any doses and finish the full course of treatment even if you feel better. Stopping it early may make the infection to come back and harder to treat. Diarrhea may occur as a side effect but should stop when your course is complete. Inform your doctor if it doesn't stop or if you find blood in your stools. It may cause dizziness. Don't drive or do anything that requires mental focus until you know how Demeclocycline Hydrochloride affects you. Discontinue Demeclocycline Hydrochloride and inform your doctor immediately if you get a rash, itchy skin, swelling of face and mouth, or have difficulty in breathing. Inform your doctor if you are pregnant, planning to conceive or breastfeeding.

Hypersensitivity. Pregnancy and lactation.

Reduced absorption w/ antacids containing Al, Mg, or Ca, Fe-containing preparations, zinc, kaolin, quinapril, strontium ranelate, sucralfate, tripotassium dicitratobismuthate. May reduce the efficacy of oral contraceptives and penicillins. Increased risk of benign intracranial HTN w/ retinoids (e.g. acitretin, isotretinoin, tretinoin). Increased risk of ergotism w/ ergotamine and methysergide. May inactivate oral typhoid vaccine. May potentiate the effect of anticoagulants. Potentially Fatal: Concurrent use w/ methoxyflurane may result to fatal renal toxicity.

[SAFE] Consuming alcohol with Demeclocycline Hydrochloride does not cause any harmful side effects.

[CONSULT YOUR DOCTOR] Demeclocycline Hydrochloride is unsafe to use during pregnancy as there is definite evidence of risk to the developing baby. However, the doctor may rarely prescribe it in some life-threatening situations if the benefits are more than the potential risks. Please consult your doctor.

[SAFE IF PRESCRIBED] Demeclocycline Hydrochloride is probably safe to use during breastfeeding. Limited human data suggests that the drug does not represent any significant risk to the baby.
