Formoterol Fumarate

Formoterol Fumarate is used for preventing symptoms of asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder (a lung disorder in which flow of air to the lung is blocked). It helps in relaxing the muscles of the air passages, thus widening it and making it easier to breathe. Formoterol Fumarate is only for the inhalational purpose, so do not swallow the capsule. The first dose is given under medical supervision to prevent the side effects happen during first use. For better results, it is suggested to take it at the same time every day. The dose and how often you take it depends on what you are taking it for. Your doctor will decide how much you need to improve your symptoms. You should take this medicine for as long as it is prescribed for you. It does not prevent the already started breathing trouble or asthma attack, hence always carry your medical inhaler with you for an emergency. The most common side effects of this medicine include Tremor(shaking hands), insomnia (difficulty in sleeping), headache and dry mouth. If these bother you or appear serious, let your doctor know. There may be ways of reducing or preventing them. Generally, it is advised to avoid alcohol while on treatment as it may affect heart rate. Before taking this medicine, let your doctor know if you have a heart problem, or have high blood pressure or diabetes. Inform your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Your doctor should also know about all other medicines you are taking as many of these may make this medicine less effective or change the way it works. Formoterol Fumarate is a bronchodilator. It works by relaxing the muscles in the airways and widens airways. This makes breathing easier.

Formoterol relaxes the bronchial smooth muscle by selectively acting on beta2-receptors with minimal effect on heart rate. It has a long-acting effect.

Adult Dose: Inhalation Prophylaxis of exercise-induced asthma Adult: 12 mcg at least 15 min prior to exercise. Additional doses should not be taken w/in 12 hr. Asthma Adult: As inhalation cap: 12 mcg bid via inhaler device, may be increased up to 24 mcg bid as necessary for severe cases. Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease Adult: As inhalation cap: 12 mcg bid via inhaler device. As metered-dose dry powd inhaler: 12 mcg 1-2 times daily. Additional doses may be given as required. Max: 48 mcg/day (24 mcg/dose). Child Dose: Inhalation Prophylaxis of exercise-induced asthma Child: >5 yr 12 mcg at least 15 min prior to exercise. Additional doses should not be taken w/in 12 hr. Asthma Child: As inhalational cap: >5 yr 12 mcg bid via inhaler device. As metered-dose dry powd inhaler: >6 yr 6-12 mcg 1-2 times daily.

Use this medicine in the dose and duration as advised by your doctor. Check the label for directions before use. Twist off the top of the respule/transpule and squeeze all the liquid into the nebulizer. It should be used right away after opening.

No interaction found/established Take the first dose of this medicine under medical supervision as it may cause wheezing or tightening of the airways (bronchospasm) immediately after using. It does not work right away and should not be used to relieve sudden breathing problems. Use your rescue inhaler to control sudden difficulty in breathing. Dry mouth may occur as a side effect. Frequent mouth rinses, good oral hygiene, increased water intake and sugarless candy may help. Gargle with warm water after each inhalation to avoid any fungal infections in your mouth and throat. Do not stop taking Formoterol Fumarate suddenly even if you do not currently have any symptoms as that may cause your breathing problems to come back.

Hypersensitivity.

Concomitant treatment with xanthine derivatives, steroids or diuretics may potentiate a possible hypokalaemic effect of beta-agonists. Increased susceptibility to cardiac arrhythmias in patients treated with digitalis. Concomitant use with quinidine, disopyramide, procainamide, phenothiazines, antihistamines, MAOI or TCAs can prolong the QT-interval and increase the risk of ventricular arrhythmias. L-dopa, L-thyroxine, oxytocin and alcohol can impair cardiac tolerance towards beta2-sympathomimetics. beta-adrenergic blockers can inhibit the effect of formoterol. Increased risk of arrhythmias in patients receiving concomitant anaesthesia with halogenated hydrocarbons.
