Metronidazole 0.75% Vag prep is an antibiotic used to treat acne and some skin infections. It helps to reduce the number of pimples. This medicine stops the bacteria from growing, which helps to resolve your symptoms. Metronidazole 0.75% Vag prep is meant for external use only. It should be applied only to the affected area of the skin as per the dosage and schedule prescribed by your doctor. In order to get the most benefit, apply it regularly and preferably at the same time each day. Do not use larger amounts or apply it more often or for a longer duration than directed. This will only increase the risk of side effects. You may have to use it for a long time (up to 3 months) before your acne starts to improve. Be patient and keep using it every day. Common side effects include application site reactions like minor burning, stinging or irritation. These are usually temporary and resolve quickly. Consult your doctor if any of these persist or if your condition does not improve. Before using it, inform your doctor if you have any previous history of allergy to it or any other medicine. Pregnant or breastfeeding women should consult their doctor before using it. Avoid any contact with your eyes, nose or mouth. Rinse it off with water if you accidentally get the medicine in these areas. Metronidazole 0.75% Vag prep is an antibiotic. • Acne

Metronidazole is converted to reduction products that interact w/ DNA to cause destruction of helical DNA structure and strand leading to a protein synthesis inhibition and cell death in susceptible organisms. It is active against most anaerobic protozoa, some gm+ve, gm-ve and facultative anaerobes.

Adult Dose: Topical/Cutaneous Bacterial vaginosis Adult: As 0.75% gel: Apply to affected area intravaginally one applicatorful once daily or bid for 5 days.

This medicine is for external use only. Use it in the dose and duration as advised by your doctor. Check the label for directions before use. Clean and dry the affected area and apply the gel. Wash your hands after applying, unless hands are the affected area.

If you miss a dose of Metronidazole 0.75% Vag prep, take it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular schedule. Do not double the dose.

No interaction found/established You have been prescribed Metronidazole 0.75% Vag prep for the treatment of Acne. Avoid getting Metronidazole 0.75% Vag prep in the eyes or nostrils or mouth. If it happens, rinse it out with plenty of warm water. It may cause skin irritation and rash. If this happens, use it less frequently or stop using it for a few days. If irritation persists, consult your doctor. Do not drink alcohol during or for 2-3 days after treatment with this medicine. You may develop nausea, vomiting, flushing and headache. Avoid exposing the treated areas to strong sunlight as this can make the treatment less effective.

Metronidazole is contraindicated in patients with a history of hypersensitivity to Metronidazole or other Nitroimidazole derivatives.

Concurrent use w/ disulfiram may produce psychotic reactions. May potentiate the effect of oral anticoagulants. May increase risk of lithium toxicity. May reduce the renal clearance resulting to increased toxicity of 5-fluorouracil. May increase serum levels of ciclosporin. May increase plasma levels of busulfan resulting to severe busulfan toxicity. Enhanced metabolism w/ phenobarbital and phenytoin resulting to decreased serum concentrations.

[SAFE IF PRESCRIBED] Metronidazole 0.75% Vag prep is generally considered safe to use during pregnancy. Animal studies have shown low or no adverse effects to the developing baby; however, there are limited human studies.

[SAFE IF PRESCRIBED] Metronidazole 0.75% Vag prep is probably safe to use during breastfeeding. Limited human data suggests that the drug does not represent any significant risk to the baby. The baby's skin should not come into direct contact with the treated area of skin. Water-miscible cream/gel is preferred as ointments may expose the baby to harmful effects of Metronidazole 0.75% Vag prep via licking.
