Description

Sodium Fusidate (Fusidic Acid) 2% Topical is an antibiotic. It is used in the treatment of bacterial skin infections. It relieves the symptoms of the infection by stopping the further growth of the causative microorganisms. Sodium Fusidate (Fusidic Acid) 2% Topical should be used in the dose and duration as prescribed by your doctor. This medicine is for external use only and should be used regularly to get the most benefit from it. Don't use more than you need as it won't clear your condition faster and some side effects may be increased. The affected area should be clean and dry before application of the ointment. You must wash your hands thoroughly before and after applying this medicine. It may cause burning sensation, skin irritation, itching and redness immediately following application over the affected area, as side effects of this medicine. However, these are temporary and usually subside on their own. Inform your doctor if they do not resolve or persist for a longer duration. Avoid direct contact of cream or ointment with your eyes. In case of direct contact, wash your eyes with water immediately and seek immediate medical attention. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant or are breastfeeding. Sodium Fusidate (Fusidic Acid) 2% Topical is an antibiotic. It works against bacteria that cause skin infections by preventing the synthesis of essential proteins necessary for survival of bacteria. Thus, it prevents the skin infection from spreading.

Mechanism of action

Fusidic acid disrupts translocation of peptide subunits and elongating the peptide chain of susceptible bacteria, thus inhibiting protein synthesis.

Dosage

Adult Dose: Topical/Cutaneous Skin infections Adult: As a 2% ointment/cream/gel: Apply onto affected area 3-4 times daily until there is improvement. If gauze dressing is used, then frequency of application may be reduced to 1-2 times daily. Child Dose: Topical/Cutaneous Skin infections Child: As a 2% ointment/cream/gel: Apply onto affected area 3-4 times daily until there is improvement. If gauze dressing is used, then frequency of application may be reduced to 1-2 times daily.

Administration

This medicine is for external use only. Use it in the dose and duration as advised by your doctor. Check the label for directions before use. Clean and dry the affected area and apply the cream. Wash your hands after applying, unless hands are the affected area.

Contraindications

Known hypersensitivity to Fusidic acid, severe hepatic failure.

Drug interactions

Synergistic action with antistaphylococcal penicillin. Antagonism with ciprofloxacin.
