Tolmetin

Tolmetin is a pain relieving medicine. It effectively alleviates pain and inflammation in conditions like rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis. Tolmetin should be taken with food. This will prevent stomach upset. Taking the medicine regularly at the right times increases its effectiveness. It is important to keep taking the medicine regularly until your doctor tells you it is safe to stop. Vomiting, stomach pain, nausea, and indigestion are some of the common side effects that might be observed on taking this medicine. It may also cause dizziness, drowsiness, or visual disturbances. Do not drive or operate heavy machines until you are fine. Your doctor may regularly monitor your kidney function, liver function and levels of blood components if you are taking the medicine for long-term treatment. Long-term use may lead to serious complications such as stomach bleeding and kidney problems. Tolmetin is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID). It works by blocking the release of certain chemical messengers that cause pain and inflammation (redness and swelling).

• Pain relief

Tolmetin decreases cyclooxygenase activity consequently decreasing formation of prostagladin precursors and inhibiting prostaglandin synthesis.

Adult Dose: Oral Rheumatoid arthritis; Osteoarthritis Adult: Initially, 400 mg tid. Maintenance: 600-1800 mg daily in 3 divided doses. Max: 1800 mg/day. Topical/Cutaneous Osteoarthritis; Rheumatoid arthritis Adult: Apply 5% gel topically. Child Dose: Oral Juvenile idiopathic arthritis Child: >2 yr: Initially, 20 mg/kg daily in 3-4 divided doses. Maintenance: 15 mg/kg/day. Max: 30 mg/kg/day. Renal Dose: Renal impairment: Dose adjustment may be needed.

Take this medicine in the dose and duration as advised by your doctor. Swallow it as a whole. Do not chew, crush or break it. Tolmetin is to be taken with food.

Pregnancy (3rd trimester), hypersensitivity to aspirin and NSAIDs, treatment of perioperative pain in CABG surgery.

Decreases the efficacy of mifepristone. Increased risk of bleeding with anticoagulants, other NSAIDs, antiplatelets, LMWH. Increased risk of convulsions with quinolones. Decreased antihypertensive response to loop diuretics, beta-blockers and ACE inhibitors. Coadmin increased plasma concentrations of lithium, methotrexate and cardiac glycosides. Increased risk of nephrotoxicity with ACE inhibitors, penicillamine, ciclosporin, tacrolimus or diuretics.

[UNSAFE] It is unsafe to consume alcohol with Tolmetin.

[CONSULT YOUR DOCTOR] Tolmetin may be unsafe to use during pregnancy. Although there are limited studies in humans, animal studies have shown harmful effects on the developing baby. [SAFE IF PRESCRIBED] Tolmetin is safe to use during breastfeeding. Human studies suggest that the drug does not pass into the breastmilk in a significant amount and is not harmful to the baby.
