Description
Adapalene 0.1% Topical is a retinoid used for the treatment of mild to moderate acne vulgaris. It binds to specific retinoic acid nuclear receptors, normalizing follicular epithelial cell differentiation and reducing microcomedone formation. This results in removal of dead skin cells, unclogging of pores and prevention of new acne formation. It is usually applied once daily at night to affected areas of the face.

Mild to moderate acne vulgaris.

Pharmacology
Adapalene is a retinoid that binds to specific retinoic acid nuclear receptors, normalizing follicular epithelial cell differentiation and reducing microcomedone formation. It acts as a modulator of cellular differentiation, keratinization and inflammatory processes.
Mechanism of action
Adapalene normalizes skin cell structure, helps remove dead skin cells and keeps pores open. This prevents new acne formation and improves skin texture.
Dosage
Adults and children (12 years and older):
- Apply a pea-sized amount of gel sparingly to the entire face once daily at bedtime
- Cleanse the face with a mild cleanser and pat dry before application
- Avoid contact with eyes, lips and mucous membranes
Administration
- For external use only (do not use in eyes, mouth, or vagina)
- Wash hands before application and clean/dry the affected area
- Apply a pea-sized amount sparingly to the entire face
- Wash hands after application
- Apply at bedtime
Missed dose
If you miss a dose, apply it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular schedule. Do not double the dose.
Side effects
Common side effects (during the first 2-4 weeks):
- Erythema (skin redness)
- Dry skin
- Skin peeling
- Skin burning/stinging
- Itching
These side effects are usually temporary and decrease with continued use.
Precautions & warnings
- Avoid exposure to sunlight and artificial UV light (skin becomes more sensitive)
- Use non-comedogenic sunscreen and protective clothing when sun exposure cannot be avoided
- Do not apply to broken, sunburnt or eczematous skin
- Use with caution with preparations containing sulfur, resorcinol, or salicylic acid
- Avoid contact with eyes, lips and nostrils
- Do not undergo cosmetic procedures during treatment
- Consult your doctor if pregnant, planning pregnancy or breastfeeding
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to adapalene or any component.

No food interactions (topical application).
Use in pregnancy
Pregnancy Category: C. No adequate controlled studies in pregnant women. Animal studies have shown harmful effects on the fetus. Use only if potential benefit justifies risk.
Pregnancy Category: C — always consult a doctor before taking during pregnancy.
Use in lactation
It is not known whether adapalene is excreted in human milk. Use with caution.
Pediatric use
Under 12 years: Safety and efficacy have not been established.
12 years and older: Adult dose applies.
Geriatric use
No dose adjustment needed for elderly patients.
Renal / hepatic impairment
No dose adjustment needed for topical use (minimal systemic absorption).
Overdose effects
Topical overdose is unlikely; excessive application may increase skin irritation and redness.
Storage conditions
Store below 25°C in a cool and dry place, protected from light. Keep out of reach of children.
