Armodafinil is a prescription medicine used in the treatment of excessive daytime sleepiness (narcolepsy). It improves wakefulness and helps you to stay awake and reduces the tendency to fall asleep during the day, thus restoring the normal sleep cycle. Armodafinil may be taken with or without food. It is advised to take this medicine at a fixed time each day to maintain a consistent level in the blood. If you miss any doses, take it as soon as you remember. Do not skip any doses and finish the full course of treatment even if you feel better. It is important that this medication is not stopped suddenly as it may worsen your symptoms. Some common side effects of this medicine include headache, nausea, and insomnia (difficulty sleeping). It even causes dizziness and sleepiness, so do not drive or do anything that requires mental focus until you know how this medicine affects you. However, these side effects are temporary and usually resolve on their own in some time. Please consult your doctor if these do not subside or bother you. Always remember that this medicine only used when advised by a doctor as it is not a replacement for a good sleep routine. You should try to get the right amount of sleep every night. Before taking Armodafinil, inform your doctor if you have any problems with your kidneys, heart, liver, or have a history of seizures (epilepsy or fits). The mechanism of armodafinil is unknown but it appears to exert its stimulant effects by reducing GABA-mediated neurotransmission.

Take this medicine in the dose and duration as advised by your doctor. Swallow it as a whole. Do not chew, crush or break it. Armodafinil may be taken with or without food, but it is better to take it at a fixed time.

If you miss a dose of Armodafinil, skip it and continue with your normal schedule. Do not double the dose.

Your doctor may monitor you for heart disease and blood pressure while taking this medicine. It makes contraceptive pills less effective, consult with a doctor for effective contraception. Avoid taking alcohol while taking this medicine as it may lead to increase side effects. Inform your doctor if you are pregnant, planning to conceive or breastfeeding. Talk to your doctor if you notice sudden mood changes or develop suicidal thoughts. Stop taking medication and inform your doctor if you experience rash, itching or breathing problem while taking this medicine. Inform your doctor if you had a history of depression, anxiety, mood disorder, or mania and drug abuse. Inform your doctor if you notice difficulty sleeping, diarrhea, hallucinations, nausea, chest pain, and fast or slow heart rate. It may cause addiction/ dependence potential when taken for long term. Do not stop taking the medication suddenly without talking to your doctor.

Uncontrolled moderate to severe hypertension or cardiac arrhythmias; history of left ventricular hypertrophy or ischaemic ECG changes, chest pain, any clinical signs of mitral valve prolapse.

May increase metabolism of ciclosporin, oral contraceptives. May increase the levels/effects of warfarin, TCAs and CYP2C19 substrates (e.g. citalopram, diazepam, methsuximide, phenytoin, propranolol, sertraline). Levels/effects may be reduced with CYP3A4 inducers (e.g. aminoglutethimide, carbamazepine, nafcillin, nevirapine, phenobarbital, phenytoin, rifamycins). Levels/effects may be increased with CYP3A4 inhibitors (e.g. azole antifungals, clarithromycin, diclofenac, doxycycline, erythromycin, imatinib, isoniazid, nefazodone, nicardipine, propofol, protease inhibitors, quinidine, telithromycin, verapamil). Avoid alcohol.
