At a glance

Astaxanthin is a powerful antioxidant that improves cardiovascular health, protects skin, prevents cataracts and macular degeneration, and reduces inflammation.

Description

Astaxanthin is a xanthophyll carotenoid with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. It has potential as a therapeutic agent in atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease.

Similar in structure to beta-carotene, astaxanthin can quench, scavenge and trap free radicals including singlet and triplet oxygen. It prevents lipid peroxidation and enhances the protective capacities of other antioxidants in the body.

The recommended daily dosage is 2-4 mg daily. Depending on dosage, it works on cardiovascular health, skin, nervous system, eyes, inflammation, and fertility.

Indications
  • Strong antioxidant
  • Improves cardiovascular health (atherosclerosis, reduce cholesterol)
  • Improves immune function
  • Improves skin condition and protects from sun damage
  • Improves recovery from central nervous system injuries
  • Protects from Parkinson's, dementia and Alzheimer's disease

Pharmacological class

Xanthophyll Carotenoid (Antioxidant)

Pharmacology

Astaxanthin is a xanthophyll carotenoid with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. It acts as an antioxidant by dual mode of action - suppressing singlet oxygen and inhibiting lipid peroxidation.

Astaxanthin is absorbed by passive diffusion into the intestinal epithelium alongside fatty acids. It is incorporated into lipoproteins, transported to the liver via lymph and blood, and partly resecreted with lipoproteins. More than 70% of astaxanthin is contained in HDL portion of plasma.

Mechanism of action

Astaxanthin suppresses singlet oxygen and inhibits lipid peroxidation, reducing harmful free radicals. Instead of sacrificing an electron, it stabilizes metabolic toxin radicals by adding them to its double-bonded chain. It stops and reverses oxidative damage to cell structures and protects healthy forms of cholesterol.

Dosage

Adults (18 years and older):

  • 4 mg daily: Strong antioxidant, improves cardiovascular health, improves immune function
  • 4-8 mg daily: Improves skin condition, protects from sun damage, improves CNS recovery, protects from cataracts and macular degeneration
  • 8-12 mg daily: Reduces inflammation (arthritis)
  • 16 mg daily: Reduces risk of infertility
