Atropine Sulphate 1% eye prep

Atropine is an anticholinergic agent which competitively blocks the muscarinic receptors in peripheral tissues. It also has mydriatic and cycloplegic effect.

Atropine is an anticholinergic agent which competitively blocks the muscarinic receptors in peripheral tissues.

Atropine blocks muscarinic receptors, causing pupillary dilation and ciliary muscle paralysis.

Adult - Inflammatory eye disorders: 1-2 drops of 1% solution up to 4 times daily.
Adult - Eye refraction: 1 drop of 1% solution twice daily for 1-2 days before procedure.
Child - Inflammatory eye disorders: 1 drop of 1% solution up to 3 times daily.
Child - Eye refraction: 1-2 drops of 0.5% solution twice daily for 1-3 days before procedure.

For ophthalmic use only. Hold the dropper close to the eye without touching it.

If you miss a dose, apply it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for your next application, skip the missed dose.

Common: Eye irritation, hyperemia, edema, dry eyes, dermatitis, blurred vision, increased intraocular pressure.
Serious: Systemic toxicity in children.

Toxic systemic reaction may occur in the very young and very old. Children are at higher risk of systemic toxicity.

Narrow angle glaucoma.

Quinidine, antidepressants, some antihistamines: Additive anticholinergic effects.

Can be used with or without food.

Pregnancy Category C. Atropine may be unsafe during pregnancy.

Trace amounts enter breast milk. AAP Committee states 'compatible with nursing'; use with caution.

Children are at higher risk of systemic toxicity.

Elderly patients are at higher risk of toxic systemic reactions.

No special precautions necessary.

Excessive use may cause systemic toxicity.

Store in a cool and dry place, protected from light. Keep out of reach of children.
