Pharmacology

Benzydamine is an NSAID that reduces pain and inflammation by reducing the production of hormone-like substances that promote the inflammatory response, and also possesses local anaesthetic activity. Chlorhexidine is an antiseptic agent that kills or prevents the growth of bacteria.

Mechanism of action

Benzydamine reduces pain and inflammation by inhibiting prostaglandin synthesis; Chlorhexidine prevents infection by destroying bacterial cell walls.

Dosage

Adult: Use as a gargle or mouth rinse every 1.5-3 hours as needed. Do not use for more than 7 days. Do not swallow.

Administration

Use as a gargle (for throat conditions) or mouth rinse (for oral lesions). Take a small amount, hold in mouth for 30-60 seconds, then spit out. Do not swallow.

Missed dose

If you miss a dose, use it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose.

Side effects

Common (2.6%): Oral numbness.
Rare (<2%): Temporary discolouration of teeth, tongue and dental restorations, burning/stinging sensation, dry mouth/thirst, tingling sensation, warm sensation, taste disturbance, nausea/vomiting, dizziness, headaches/drowsiness, allergic reactions (skin rashes, increased sensitivity to sunlight).

Precautions & warnings

Thoroughly brush teeth before use (to minimize tooth discolouration); do not swallow; do not use for more than 7 days; consult doctor if symptoms do not improve after a few days.
