Pharmacology
Calcium Chloride prevents or treats negative calcium balance and regulates action potential excitation threshold to facilitate nerve and muscle performance. Potassium Chloride is a major cation of intracellular fluid, playing an active role in nerve impulse conduction in the heart, brain, and skeletal muscle, and in muscle contraction. Dextrose is a monosaccharide that provides calories and water for hydration, reduces protein and nitrogen loss, and promotes glycogen deposition in the liver.
Mechanism of action
When administered intravenously, this solution provides calcium, potassium, and dextrose to the body, replenishing essential electrolytes and fluids while providing energy.
Dosage
Adults: Generally administered at 30-75 drops/min IV infusion.
Note: Dose and infusion rate are determined based on the patient's clinical condition, age, and physician's advice.
Administration
For IV infusion only. Administered by healthcare professionals. Patient should not self-administer.
Missed dose
Hospital-only medicine. Administered by doctor or nurse. Missed dose concept does not apply (hospital-administered).
Side effects
Infusion-related reactions: Febrile response, infection at the site of injection, venous thrombosis or phlebitis extending from the site of injection, extravasation, hypervolemia.
Precautions & warnings
- Do not use if the solution is cloudy, contains particles, or is expired.
- Infusion should be immediately discontinued if rigor occurs for any reason during the process.
- Monitor the patient's condition and response during infusion.
Contraindications
- Known allergy to corn or corn products (for dextrose-containing solutions)
- Severe hypercalcemia
- Severe hyperkalemia
Drug interactions
- Insulin: When used with dextrose, insulin stimulates potassium uptake by cells, especially in muscle tissue, lowering serum potassium levels.
- Digitalis glycosides: Calcium may precipitate digitalis toxicity in hypercalcemia; caution required.
