Description
Calcium + Vitamin D3 is a nutritional supplement that plays an important role in preventing osteoporosis and other bone-related diseases. Calcium, magnesium, and vitamin D3 are the macronutrients for bone health. Very little calcium is absorbed without vitamin D3. Like calcium, magnesium increases bone strength and rigidity.
Each film-coated tablet contains: Calcium Carbonate USP 1500 mg (equivalent to 600 mg elemental Calcium), Cholecalciferol BP 2 mg (equivalent to 200 IU Vitamin D3), Magnesium Oxide USP 66.34 mg (equivalent to 40 mg Magnesium), Zinc Oxide USP 9.34 mg (equivalent to 7.5 mg Zinc), Cupric Oxide 1.25 mg (equivalent to 1 mg Copper), Manganese Sulfate Monohydrate 5.54 mg (equivalent to 1.8 mg Manganese), and Boron Citrate 5 mg (equivalent to 0.25 mg Boron).

Pharmacology
Calcium is the primary mineral component of bones, providing strength and rigidity. Vitamin D3 enhances intestinal calcium absorption and regulates bone mineralization. Magnesium increases bone strength and aids calcium metabolism. Zinc, copper, manganese, and boron are micronutrients essential for bone health. Deficiencies of these micronutrients are observed in patients with osteoporosis.
Mechanism of action
Calcium supports bone mineralization. Vitamin D3 enhances calcium absorption and stimulates bone formation. Magnesium increases bone strength. Zinc, copper, manganese, and boron help maintain bone health.
Dosage
Adults: 1 film-coated tablet twice daily, preferably 1 tablet in the morning and 1 tablet in the evening, with or just after main meals with a full glass of water, or as directed by a physician.
Children (3-7 years): 1 effervescent tablet daily.
Children (7 years and older): 1 to 2 effervescent tablets daily.
Note: Allowances should be made for calcium and vitamin D3 supplements from other sources.
Administration
Take with or just after meals with a full glass of water. Film-coated tablets should be swallowed whole; do not chew or crush. Effervescent tablets should be dissolved in a glass of water before consumption. Follow the dose and duration as advised by your physician.
Missed dose
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. Skip the missed dose if it is almost time for your next dose. Do not double the dose.
Side effects
Common side effects: Mild gastrointestinal disturbances such as constipation, flatulence, nausea, gastric pain, diarrhea (rare).
Occasional skin rash has been reported with vitamin D3 supplements.
Hypercalciuria and, in rare cases, hypercalcemia have been seen with long-term treatment at high doses.
Precautions & warnings
- Patients with mild to moderate renal failure or mild hypercalciuria should be supervised carefully.
- Periodic checks of plasma calcium levels and urinary calcium excretion should be made.
- In patients with a history of renal stones, urinary calcium excretion should be measured to exclude hypercalciuria.
- With long-term treatment, monitor serum and urinary calcium levels and kidney function; reduce or stop treatment temporarily if urinary calcium exceeds 7.5 mmol/24 hours.
- Allowances should be made for calcium and vitamin D3 supplements from other sources.
Contraindications
- Hypercalcemia resulting from myeloma, bone metastasis or other malignant bone disease, sarcoidosis, primary hyperparathyroidism, and vitamin D3 overdosage
- Severe renal failure
- Hypersensitivity to any of the ingredients
- Relative contraindications: osteoporosis due to prolonged immobilization, renal stones, severe hypercalciuria
Drug interactions
- Thiazide diuretics: Reduce urinary calcium excretion, increasing risk of hypercalcemia.
- Digitalized patients (cardiac glycosides): Hypocalcemia must be avoided; calcium combination may attenuate cardiac glycoside effects.
- Foods containing oxalic acid, phosphate, or phytic acid: May reduce calcium absorption.
- Phenytoin or barbiturates: May decrease vitamin D3 effect due to metabolic activation.
- Glucocorticoids: May decrease vitamin D3 effect.
- Thyroxine, bisphosphonates, sodium fluoride, quinolone or tetracycline antibiotics, iron: Calcium salts may reduce absorption; allow at least 4 hours interval.
Food interactions
Oxalic acid (spinach, rhubarb), phosphate, and phytic acid (grains) may reduce calcium absorption.
Use in pregnancy
Use during pregnancy and lactation under the direction of a physician. Requirements for calcium and vitamin D3 are increased during pregnancy. Calcium and iron supplements should be taken at different times. Vitamin D3 overdoses have shown teratogenic effects in pregnant animals. Long-term hypercalcemia can lead to physical and mental retardation, aortic stenosis, and retinopathy in newborns. Vitamin D3 and its metabolites pass into breast milk.

Renal / hepatic impairment
Hepatic impairment: No special precautions required, but consult your physician.
Overdose effects
Overdose symptoms: Nausea, vomiting, severe drowsiness, dry mouth, loss of appetite, metallic taste, stomach cramps, diarrhea, headache, constipation.
Storage conditions
Store in a dry place away from light and heat. Keep out of reach of children.
