Cholera Saline

Cholera Saline is a sterile solution of Sodium Chloride, Potassium Chloride and Sodium Acetate. Each 100 ml of solution contains Sodium Chloride BP 0.5 g, Potassium Chloride BP 0.1 g and Sodium Acetate BP 0.393 g. The Solution contains per litre Sodium 134 mmol, Potassium 13 mmol, Chloride 99 mmol and Acetate 48 mmol. It is indicated in cholera, diarrhoea, vomiting, fluid loss, to replenish and restore the normal electrolyte balance of the body.

Cholera Saline provides Sodium, Potassium, Chloride and Acetate to the body to replenish electrolytes lost through diarrhoea, vomiting and other conditions, restoring normal electrolyte balance.

The volume and rate of infusion depends upon the requirements of the patient and the judgement of the physician. It usually varies with age, weight and clinical condition of the patient.

Administration Procedure:
Check infusion set and solution prior to use. Tear off the protective cover of the Eurohead. Open the flow regulator fully. Insert the spike of the administration set to the Eurohead and fit the connector firmly to the needle. Gradually allow the fluid to flow down to the needle tip. Remove the protective cover of the needle. Locate the venipuncture site, clean with antiseptic solution, insert the needle, tape the puncture site, and start infusion while adjusting drip speed.

Cholera Saline is an intravenous fluid given by healthcare professionals. You cannot miss a dose yourself.

Common Side Effects:

• Severe burning, pain, or swelling around the IV needle
• Warmth, redness, oozing, or bleeding where the IV was placed
• Fever, ongoing cough

• Should be infused with caution in patients where electrolyte imbalance may cause detrimental effects, e.g. in pregnancy, renal impairment, heart failure, pulmonary congestion, head injury etc.
• Caution is required in patients receiving potassium sparing diuretics.
