Clobetasol Propionate 0.05% topical

Clobetasol Propionate 0.05% topical belongs to a group of medicines called steroids. It is used to treat various skin conditions such as dermatitis, eczema, and allergies. It works by reducing swelling, redness, and itchiness of the skin and prevents further irritation. Clobetasol Propionate 0.05% topical is only meant for external use and should be used as advised by your doctor. You should normally wash and dry the affected area before applying a thin layer of the medicine. Avoid any contact with your eyes, nose or mouth. Rinse it off with plenty of water if you accidentally get it in these areas. Avoid covering the treated area with airtight dressings such as bandages unless directed by a doctor.

Clobetasol Propionate 0.05% topical is a steroid. It works by blocking the production of certain chemical messengers that make the skin red, swollen and itchy.

• Psoriasis (excluding widespread plaque psoriasis)
• Recalcitrant dermatoses
• Lichen planus
• Discoid lupus erythematosus
• Other skin conditions which do not respond satisfactorily to less potent steroids

Clobetasol Propionate is a very potent topical corticosteroid. It has anti-inflammatory, antipruritic and vasoconstrictive properties. It shows anti-inflammatory activity via multiple mechanisms to inhibit late phase allergic reactions. It decreases the density of mast cells, chemotaxis and activation of eosinophils. It also reduces cytokine production and inhibits the metabolism of arachidonic acid. Corticosteroids are thought to act by induction of phospholipase A2 inhibitory proteins (lipocortins), which control the biosynthesis of potent mediators of inflammation such as prostaglandins and leukotrienes by inhibiting the release of arachidonic acid.

Clobetasol Propionate stabilizes leukocyte lysosomal membranes, inhibits migration of inflammatory cells, and decreases capillary permeability to reduce inflammation and itching.

Adult Dose (Cream/Ointment): Apply a thin layer to affected areas twice daily and rub in gently and completely. Not to exceed 50 g/week. Treatment should be limited to 2 consecutive weeks.

Pediatric Dose (>1 year): Same as adult dose. Courses should be limited if possible to five days and reviewed weekly.

Scalp Application (Shampoo): Apply to dry scalp once daily, leave in place for 15 minutes, then lather and rinse thoroughly. Not to exceed 50 g/week. Treatment should be limited to 4 consecutive weeks.

Scalp Solution/Spray: Apply once or twice daily to affected areas and gently rub in. Not to exceed 50 ml/week. Discontinue if no response after one week.

This medicine is for external use only. Use it in the dose and duration as advised by your doctor. Check the label for directions before use. Clean and dry the affected area and apply the cream. Wash your hands after applying, unless hands are the affected area.

If you miss a dose of Clobetasol Propionate 0.05% topical, apply it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next application, skip the missed dose. Do not double the dose.

Common Side Effects:

• Thinning of skin
• Application site reactions (burning, stinging, itching and redness)
• Striae (stretch marks)
• Dilatation of superficial blood vessels
• Pigmentation changes
• Hypertrichosis (excessive hair growth)

Serious Side Effects (long-term/large area use): Hypercortisolism (adrenal suppression), Cushing's syndrome.

• Long-term continuous topical therapy should be avoided where possible, particularly in children (adrenal suppression can occur readily even without occlusion).
• If used on the face, courses should be limited to five days and occlusion should not be used (facial skin is more prone to atrophic changes).
• If applied to the eyelids, care is needed to ensure that the preparation does not enter the eye (glaucoma or cataract might result).
• Topical corticosteroids may be hazardous in psoriasis (rebound relapses, development of tolerance, risk of generalized pustular psoriasis).
• Appropriate antimicrobial therapy should be used whenever treating inflammatory lesions which have become infected.
• Caution during pregnancy and lactation.

• Rosacea
• Acne vulgaris
• Perioral dermatitis
• Primary cutaneous viral infections (herpes simplex, chickenpox)
• Hypersensitivity
• Primarily infected skin lesions caused by fungi (candidiasis, tinea) or bacteria (impetigo)
• Perianal and genital pruritus
• Dermatoses in children under one year of age

CYP3A4 inhibitors (e.g., ritonavir, itraconazole) may inhibit corticosteroid metabolism and lead to increased systemic exposure.

No food interactions have been found or established.

[CONSULT YOUR DOCTOR] Clobetasol Propionate 0.05% topical may be unsafe to use during pregnancy. Topical administration of corticosteroids to pregnant animals can cause abnormalities of fetal development. Pregnancy Category C.

[SAFE IF PRESCRIBED] Clobetasol Propionate 0.05% topical is probably safe to use during breastfeeding. Limited human data suggests that the drug does not represent any significant risk to the baby. However, it is unknown whether this drug is excreted in human milk.

Pediatric dose (>1 year): Same as adult dose (twice daily, not exceeding 50 g/week). Courses should be limited if possible to five days and reviewed weekly. Contraindicated in dermatoses in children under one year of age. Shampoo is not recommended under 18 years.

Limited information is available regarding dose adjustment for elderly patients.

For topical use, no dose adjustment is required in renal or hepatic impairment. However, systemic absorption may occur when used over large areas.

Acute overdosage is very unlikely to occur. In the case of chronic overdosage or misuse, features of hypercortisolism may appear; topical steroids should be discontinued gradually.

Keep below 30°C temperature, protected from light and moisture. Do not freeze. Keep out of reach of children.
