Clotrimazole

Clotrimazole is an antifungal medication. It is used in the treatment of fungal infection of vagina such as burning, itching, and discharge. It kills fungi by destroying the fungal cell membrane. Clotrimazole is for external use only. You should use it in the dose and duration as advised by your doctor. It is best to use it at night time for better results. The affected area should be clean before using the medicine. You must wash your hands thoroughly before and after applying this medicine. Do not stop using it until you have finished the complete course, even when you feel better. You must consult with your doctor if you do not observe any improvement within 3 days of treatment.

• Vulvovaginal candidiasis (vaginal fungal infection)

Clotrimazole is an antifungal medication which treats vaginal infections. It works by killing the fungi inside the vaginal tract by destroying their cell membrane. This reduces burning, itching, and discharge that may occur with these infections.

Clotrimazole kills fungi by inhibiting the synthesis of ergosterol, an essential component of the fungal cell membrane.

Adult Dose (Vaginal Tablet):

Use in the dose and duration as advised by your doctor. Wash and dry the vaginal area. Dip the tablet in lukewarm water just to moisten it. Lie on your back and gently insert the tablet into the vagina as high as possible with or without the use of an applicator. It is best to use it just before bedtime.

If you miss a dose of Clotrimazole, use it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose. Do not double the dose.

Common Side Effects:

• Vaginal irritation
• Vaginal burning sensation
• Itching
• Redness

• Clotrimazole helps treat vaginal fungal infections. Do not skip any doses and finish the full course of treatment even if you feel better.
• It is inserted into the vagina using an applicator, usually at night before going to bed.
• Avoid contact with your eyes. If accidental exposure occurs, rinse immediately with plenty of water.
• It can damage condoms and diaphragms and make them ineffective at preventing pregnancy. Ask your doctor about other suitable methods of preventing pregnancy.
• Inform your doctor if your symptoms do not get improved within 3 days of taking the medicine.

• Hypersensitivity.

Antagonism with polyene antibiotics.

[SAFE IF PRESCRIBED] Clotrimazole is generally considered safe to use during pregnancy. Animal studies have shown low or no adverse effects to the developing baby; however, there are limited human studies. Pregnancy Category B.

[SAFE IF PRESCRIBED] Clotrimazole is safe to use during breastfeeding. Human studies suggest that the drug does not pass into the breastmilk in a significant amount and is not harmful to the baby.

Limited information is available regarding use in children.

Limited information is available regarding dose adjustment for elderly patients.

For topical/vaginal use, no dose adjustment is required in renal or hepatic impairment.

Overdose may cause severe irritation. Consult a physician if overdose is suspected.

Store in a cool and dry place, away from light and out of reach of children.
