Desonide 0.05% Topical

Desonide gel contains Desonide which is a synthetic nonfluorinated corticosteroid for topical dermatologic use. Topical corticosteroids have anti-inflammatory, antipruritic and vasoconstrictive properties. The mechanism of the anti-inflammatory activity of the topical steroids, in general, is unclear. Corticosteroids are thought to act by the induction of phospholipase A2 inhibitory proteins, collectively called lipocortins. It is postulated that these proteins control the biosynthesis of potent mediators of inflammation such as prostaglandins and leukotrienes by inhibiting the release of their common precursor arachidonic acid.

• Mild to moderate atopic dermatitis (patients 3 months and older)

Corticosteroids are thought to act by the induction of phospholipase A2 inhibitory proteins, called lipocortins, which control the biosynthesis of mediators of inflammation such as prostaglandins and leukotrienes.

Desonide induces phospholipase A2 inhibitory proteins, reducing arachidonic acid release and decreasing production of inflammatory mediators such as prostaglandins and leukotrienes, thereby reducing skin redness, swelling, and itching.

Adult: Apply a thin layer to affected areas 2-4 times daily. Discontinue when control is achieved. If no improvement within 4 weeks, discontinue use.

For external use only. Clean and dry the affected area and apply a thin layer of gel. Avoid contact with eyes. Wash hands after application.

If you miss a dose, apply it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for your next application, skip the missed dose.

Common local side effects: Burning, rash, and pruritus at the application site.
Rare (with higher potency steroids or occlusive dressings): Folliculitis, acneiform eruptions, hypopigmentation, perioral dermatitis, secondary infection, skin atrophy, striae, and miliaria.

For external use only; avoid contact with eyes; do not use on underarm or groin areas in children; discontinue if irritation develops; do not use occlusive dressings; do not use on infected skin; do not use for more than 4 consecutive weeks.

Hypersensitivity; primary infective skin conditions.

No adequate information on drug interactions is available.

Can be used with or without food.

Pregnancy Category C. Desonide may be unsafe during pregnancy. Animal studies have shown harmful effects on the developing baby. Use only if clearly needed.

Desonide is probably safe during breastfeeding. Limited human data suggests that the drug does not represent any significant risk to the baby.

Safety and effectiveness in pediatric patients less than 3 months of age have not been evaluated; use in this age group is not recommended.

No specific dosage adjustment is necessary for elderly patients.

No special precautions are necessary for patients with kidney or liver problems.

Topically applied Desonide can be absorbed in sufficient amounts to produce systemic effects.
