Description
Dithranol + Boric Acid + Salicylic Acid Ointment is a topical preparation used in the treatment of psoriasis, eczema, ringworm, and pruritus. Each 100 grams of ointment contains Dithranol BP 0.75 g, Boric Acid BP 1.75 g, and Salicylic Acid BP 2.50 g.
Dithranol may stop ATP supply to epidermal cells, thereby stopping energy supply to keratinocytes, which explains its healing efficacy in psoriasis. Salicylic Acid is a keratolytic agent that increases the rate of desquamation, removing dead skin cells and helping the drug penetrate the skin. Boric Acid possesses bacteriostatic and fungistatic properties that suppress bacterial and fungal growth.

Pharmacology
Dithranol stops ATP supply to epidermal cells, thereby stopping energy supply to keratinocytes, which explains its healing efficacy in psoriasis. Salicylic Acid is a keratolytic agent that increases desquamation, removing dead skin cells and helping drug penetration. It softens and destroys the stratum corneum by increasing endogenous hydration. Boric acid possesses bacteriostatic and fungistatic properties that suppress bacterial and fungal growth.
Mechanism of action
- Dithranol: Stops ATP supply to epidermal cells, reducing energy supply to keratinocytes, thereby controlling abnormal cell growth in psoriasis. Also has antifungal activity.
- Salicylic Acid: Acts as a keratolytic agent, increasing desquamation, removing dead skin cells, and helping drug penetration. Softens stratum corneum by increasing endogenous hydration.
- Boric Acid: Suppresses bacterial and fungal growth through bacteriostatic and fungistatic properties.
Dosage
Clean the affected area thoroughly with warm water. Dry the area and apply a small amount of ointment to the affected area only (do not apply outside the lesion). Apply once daily or twice daily as advised by the physician until the lesion heals. After application, cover with a dressing and leave for 1 hour. After healing, continue using a small amount for 3-4 days for complete recovery.
Administration
For external use only. Clean and dry the affected area before applying a small amount of ointment. Do not apply on normal skin outside the lesion. Avoid contact with eyes or areas near the eyes. Wash hands thoroughly after use.
Missed dose
If you miss a dose, apply it as soon as you remember. Skip the missed dose if it is almost time for your next application. Do not double the dose.

Precautions & warnings

- Avoid use on dentures.
