Description
Docusate sodium is an anionic surfactant which is considered to act primarily by increasing the penetration of fluid into the faeces. It may also have other effects on intestinal fluid secretion, and may act both as stimulant and as faecal softening agent.

Pharmacology
Docusate sodium is an anionic surfactant which is considered to act primarily by increasing the penetration of fluid into the faeces. It may also have other effects on intestinal fluid secretion, and may act both as stimulant and as faecal softening agent.
Mechanism of action
Docusate Sodium softens stool by increasing water absorption into the stool, making defecation easier.
Dosage
Adult: 1 tablet daily at bedtime.
Child (6-12 years): 40-120 mg/day in divided doses.
Child (3-6 years): 20-60 mg/day in divided doses.
Administration
Take in the dose and duration as advised by your doctor.
Missed dose
If you miss a dose of Docusate Sodium, take it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose. Do not double the dose.
Side effects
Common: Abdominal cramping, diarrhea, excessive bowel activity, intestinal obstruction, throat irritation.
Precautions & warnings
Do not use if abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, or intestinal obstruction is present. Exclude organic disorders before use. Use as an adjuvant to a healthy lifestyle and diet.
Contraindications
Intestinal obstruction or undiagnosed abdominal symptoms; prolonged use; concurrent use with liquid paraffin.
Drug interactions
GI uptake of other drugs: Enhanced.
Anthraquinone laxatives: Effect increased.
Aspirin: Increased incidence of adverse effects.
Mineral oil: Do not take concurrently.
Food interactions
Can be taken with or without food.
Use in pregnancy
Pregnancy Category C. Use during pregnancy only if benefits outweigh risks.
Pregnancy Category: C — always consult a doctor before taking during pregnancy.
Use in lactation
Docusate sodium is excreted in breast milk; use with caution.
Pediatric use
Pediatric dosing is age-based (3-12 years).
Geriatric use
No specific dosage adjustment is necessary for elderly patients.
Renal / hepatic impairment
No special precautions are necessary for patients with kidney or liver problems.
Overdose effects
Overdose may cause excessive water and electrolyte loss; encourage fluid intake and replenish electrolytes.
