Description
Epinastine Hydrochloride 0.05% Eye prep is an antihistaminic medication. It is used to treat inflammation of eyes (redness and swelling) caused due to various allergies. It is used to relieve symptoms like watery, itchy, red, swollen eyes or eyelids due to allergic conjunctivitis.
Epinastine Hydrochloride 0.05% Eye prep is an antihistaminic medication. It treats allergy symptoms such as itching, swelling, and rashes by blocking the effects of a chemical messenger (histamine) in the body.
Indications
- Allergic eye disease: Indicated for the treatment of signs and symptoms of allergic conditions of the anterior segment of the eye.

Pharmacology
Epinastine is a topically active antihistamine that antagonizes both histamine H1 and H2 receptors. Moreover, it has mast cell stabilizing activity and prevents the release of inflammatory mediators from the blood vessel. Epinastine does not penetrate the blood-brain barrier and therefore is not expected to induce side effects on the central nervous system.
Mechanism of action
Epinastine is a selective H1-receptor antagonist. It blocks release of histamine from mast cells.
Dosage
Adult Dose:
- Allergic conjunctivitis: Instill 1 drop in affected eye twice daily.
Child Dose (>2 years):
- Allergic conjunctivitis: Instill 1 drop in affected eye twice daily.
Administration
This medicine is for external use only. Take it in the dose and duration as advised by your doctor. Check the label for directions before use. Hold the dropper close to the eye without touching it. Gently squeeze the dropper and place the medicine inside the lower eyelid. Wipe off extra liquid.
Missed dose
If you miss a dose of Epinastine Hydrochloride eye drops, apply it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose.
Side effects
Common Side Effects:
- Ocular hyperemia
- Itching
- Burning sensation in eye
- Mild burning sensation
- Folliculosis
- Pruritus
- Cold symptoms and upper respiratory infections
Precautions & warnings
Precautions:
- Epinastine Hydrochloride 0.05% Eye prep may cause blurring of your vision for a short time just after its use. Do not drive until your vision is clear.
- Your doctor has prescribed this to treat inflammation due to allergies of the eye.
- Apply pressure on the corner of the eye (close to the nose) for about 1 minute immediately after instilling the drop.
- Wait for at least 5-10 minutes before delivering the next medication in the same eye.
- Make sure to use within 4 weeks of opening the bottle.
- For ophthalmic use only. Patients should be advised not to wear contact lenses if their eye is red.
Contraindications
Contraindications: Hypersensitivity to Epinastine or to any of the components of this preparation.

Use in pregnancy
Use in Pregnancy: Epinastine Hydrochloride may be unsafe to use during pregnancy. Animal studies have shown harmful effects on the developing baby. Should be used only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus.
Pregnancy Category: C — always consult a doctor before taking during pregnancy.
Use in lactation
Use in Lactation: Epinastine Hydrochloride 0.05% Eye prep is probably safe to use during breastfeeding. Limited human data suggests that the drug does not represent any significant risk to the baby. After using eye drops, place pressure over the corner of eye and remove excess solution with tissue.
Pediatric use
Pediatric Use: Safety and effectiveness in children below the age of 3 years have not been established.
Geriatric use
Geriatric Use: No overall differences in safety and effectiveness have been observed between elderly and other adult patients.
Renal / hepatic impairment

Overdose effects
Overdose: Limited information is available on overdose. Excessive use may cause eye irritation.
Storage conditions
Storage: Store in a cool & dry place, protect from light. Do not use longer than one month after the first opening. Keep out of reach of children.
