Description

Ferrous Sulfate + Folic Acid + Zinc Sulfate is a timed-release capsule indicated for the treatment and prophylaxis of Iron, Folic Acid and Zinc deficiency especially during pregnancy and lactation.

Each timed-release capsule contains: Ferrous Sulphate BP 150 mg (equivalent to 47 mg Iron), Folic Acid BP 500 mcg and Zinc Sulphate Monohydrate USP 61.80 mg (equivalent to 22.50 mg Zinc).

Pharmacology

Iron is an essential component in the formation of hemoglobin. Folic acid is required for nucleoprotein synthesis and the maintenance of normal erythropoiesis and prevents neural tube defects during pregnancy. Zinc sulfate is a cofactor in over 100 enzymes and supports a healthy immune system. The timed-release capsules are designed to reduce the possibility of gastrointestinal irritation.

Mechanism of action

Iron helps in hemoglobin formation, folic acid helps in red blood cell formation and prevents neural tube defects, zinc sulfate supports immune system.

Dosage

Adult & Elderly Dose: 1 capsule daily; in more severe cases, 2 capsules daily may be required.

Child Dose (Over 1 year): 1 capsule daily (capsule may be opened and pellets mixed with soft cool food, do not chew).

Administration

For maximum absorption take on empty stomach, but may take with or after meals to minimize GI irritation. Timed-release capsules are designed to reduce the possibility of gastrointestinal irritation.

Missed dose

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as possible; however, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose.

Side effects

  • Dark stools (usual during iron therapy)

Precautions & warnings

Precautions:

  • Care should be taken in patients who may develop iron overload (hemochromatosis, hemolytic anemia or red cell aplasia).
  • Iron and zinc chelate with tetracycline and absorption may be impaired.
  • Absorption of iron may be impaired by penicillamine and antacids.
  • In patients with renal failure, a risk of zinc accumulation could exist.
  • Failure to respond to treatment may indicate other causes of anemia and should be further investigated.

Drug interactions

Drug Interactions:

  • Tetracycline: Iron and zinc chelate with tetracycline; separate administration by several hours.
  • Penicillamine, Antacids: May impair absorption of iron.

Use in pregnancy

Use in Pregnancy: Avoid use during first trimester if possible; administration requires definite evidence of iron deficiency; supplementation justified during remainder of pregnancy.

Use in lactation

Use in Lactation: If currently breast-feeding, contact your physician; zinc and iron supplementation may be needed.

Pediatric use

Geriatric use

Geriatric Use: Elderly: 1 capsule daily (2 capsules in severe cases).

Renal / hepatic impairment

Renal Impairment: Risk of zinc accumulation may exist in patients with renal failure; caution required.

Hepatic Impairment: Use with caution in patients with liver disease.

Overdose effects

Overdose: Iron overdosage is dangerous, especially in children; gastric lavage and desferrioxamine; zinc sulfate overdose is corrosive.

Storage: Protected from light and moisture, store below 30 degree C. Keep out of reach of children.
