Fluorescein Sodium 2% Eye prep

Fluorescein Sodium 2% Eye prep is used for diagnostic ophthalmic procedures and fitting of hard contact lenses. It acts as a diagnostic staining agent to identify damaged areas on the surface of the eye.

Fluorescein, a precursor of the eosins, temporarily stains any cell it enters therefore marking any damaged areas. It is widely used in ophthalmology to detect corneal abrasions, ulcers, and other surface defects.

Adult Dose (Ophthalmic):

• Diagnostic staining: Moisten by applying 1-2 drops on to the eye.

Apply 1-2 drops to the eye for diagnostic staining.

Side Effects:

• Transient yellow coloration of skin and urine
• Staining of the skin, clothing and soft contact lenses

Serious Side Effects: Severe local tissue damage, including phlebitis, skin sloughing, toxic neuritis (from extravasation).

Precautions:

• Severe local tissue damage may occur from extravasation; use caution; discontinue immediately if extravasation occurs.
• Transient yellow coloration of skin and urine is normal and harmless.
• Caution to avoid staining clothing and contact lenses.

Contraindications:

• Hypersensitivity to components or mercury-containing compounds
• History of hypersensitivity to fluorescein sodium
