Description

Flupenthixol + Melitracen is a combination of two medicines used in the treatment of depression. This medicine helps by increasing the level of chemical messengers in the brain that have a calming effect on the brain and relax the nerves, thus treating your depression.

Flupenthixol + Melitracen is a combination of two medicines: Flupenthixol and Melitracen. Flupenthixol is a typical antipsychotic. It works by blocking the action of dopamine, a chemical messenger in the brain that affects thoughts and mood. Melitracen is a tricyclic antidepressant which increases the levels of chemical messengers in the brain that help in regulating the mood and treat depression.

Pharmacology

This consists of two well known and well proven compounds: flupentixol-a neuroleptic with anxiolytic and antidepressant properties of its own when given in small doses, and melitracen-a bipolar thymoleptic with activating properties in low doses. In combination the compounds render a preparation with antidepressant, anxiolytic and activating properties.

Mechanism of action

Flupenthixol blocks dopamine receptors; Melitracen inhibits serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake to improve mood.

Dosage

Adult Dose: Usually 2 tablets daily in the morning and noon; in severe cases, the morning dose may be increased to 2 tablets.

Elderly Dose: 1 tablet in the morning.

Maintenance Dose: Usually 1 tablet in the morning.

Administration

Take this medicine in the dose and duration as advised by your doctor. Swallow it as a whole. Do not chew, crush or break it. Flupenthixol + Melitracen may be taken with or without food, but it is better to take it at a fixed time.

Missed dose

If you miss a dose of Flupenthixol + Melitracen, take it as soon as possible; however, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose.

Side effects

Common Side Effects: Side effects are rare at recommended doses; transient restlessness and insomnia may occur.

Precautions & warnings

Precautions:

  • Flupenthixol + Melitracen may decrease alertness, affect vision or make you feel sleepy and dizzy; do not drive if these symptoms occur.
  • Avoid alcohol (can make drowsiness worse).
  • Can cause changes in blood sugar levels; monitor blood sugar regularly.
  • Inform doctor if you have liver disease, thyroid disorder, severe heart disease, or urinary disorder.
