Flupenthixol + Melitracen

Flupenthixol + Melitracen is a combination of two medicines used in the treatment of depression. This medicine helps by increasing the level of chemical messengers in the brain that have a calming effect on the brain and relax the nerves, thus treating your depression.

Flupenthixol + Melitracen is a combination of two medicines: Flupenthixol and Melitracen. Flupenthixol is a typical antipsychotic. It works by blocking the action of dopamine, a chemical messenger in the brain that affects thoughts and mood. Melitracen is a tricyclic antidepressant which increases the levels of chemical messengers in the brain that help in regulating the mood and treat depression.

• Anxiety and Depression: Used for anxiety, depression, apathy, psychogenic depression, depressive neuroses, masked depression, menopausal depressions, and dysphoria and depression in alcoholics and drug addicts.

Combined anxiolytics & anti-depressant drugs

Antipsychotic + Tricyclic Antidepressant

This consists of two well known and well proven compounds: flupentixol-a neuroleptic with anxiolytic and antidepressant properties of its own when given in small doses, and melitracen-a bipolar thymoleptic with activating properties in low doses. In combination the compounds render a preparation with antidepressant, anxiolytic and activating properties.

Flupenthixol blocks dopamine receptors; Melitracen inhibits serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake to improve mood.

Adult Dose: Usually 2 tablets daily in the morning and noon; in severe cases, the morning dose may be increased to 2 tablets.

Elderly Dose: 1 tablet in the morning.

Maintenance Dose: Usually 1 tablet in the morning.

Take this medicine in the dose and duration as advised by your doctor. Swallow it as a whole. Do not chew, crush or break it. Flupenthixol + Melitracen may be taken with or without food, but it is better to take it at a fixed time.

If you miss a dose of Flupenthixol + Melitracen, take it as soon as possible; however, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose.

Common Side Effects: Side effects are rare at recommended doses; transient restlessness and insomnia may occur.

Precautions:

• Flupenthixol + Melitracen may decrease alertness, affect vision or make you feel sleepy and dizzy; do not drive if these symptoms occur.
• Avoid alcohol (can make drowsiness worse).
• Can cause changes in blood sugar levels; monitor blood sugar regularly.
• Inform doctor if you have liver disease, thyroid disorder, severe heart disease, or urinary disorder.
• Talk to doctor if sudden mood changes or suicidal thoughts occur.
• Let doctor know before undergoing any surgical procedure.

Contraindications:

• Immediate recovery phase after myocardial infarction
• Defects in bundle-branch conduction
• Untreated narrow-angle glaucoma
• Acute alcohol, barbiturate and opiate intoxications
• MAO-inhibitor within two weeks
• Excitable or overactive patients

Drug Interactions:

• Alcohol, barbiturates and other CNS depressants: May enhance response.
• MAO inhibitors: May cause hypertensive crises.
• Guanethidine: Antihypertensive effect reduced.
• Adrenaline and noradrenaline: Effects enhanced.

Food Interactions: It is unsafe to consume alcohol with Flupenthixol + Melitracen.

Use in Pregnancy: May be unsafe; animal studies have shown harmful effects; should preferably not be given during pregnancy.

Use in Lactation: Information regarding use during breastfeeding is not available; consult your doctor.

Pediatric Use: No specific dosage recommendations for children.

Geriatric Use: Elderly dose: 1 tablet in the morning.

Renal Impairment: Limited information available; consult your doctor.

Hepatic Impairment: Use with caution; dose adjustment may be needed.

Overdose: Symptoms of intoxication by melitracen (anticholinergic nature) dominate; gastric lavage and activated charcoal; support respiratory and cardiovascular systems; do not use adrenaline; treat convulsions with diazepam and extrapyramidal symptoms with biperiden.

Storage: Store at a temperature not exceeding 30 degree C in a dry place. Protect from light. Keep out of reach of children.
