Fluticasone Propionate 0.05% Topical

Introduction: Fluticasone Propionate 0.05% Topical belongs to a group of medicines called steroids. It is used for treatment of skin conditions with inflammation and itching such as eczema, dermatitis, and psoriasis. It provides relief from pain, swelling, redness, and itching.

How it works: Fluticasone Propionate utilises a fluorocarbothioate ester linkage at the C17 position. It has potent vasoconstrictive and anti-inflammatory activity, but weak HPA inhibitory effect when applied topically.

Important Information: For external use only. Apply a thin layer to the affected area. Avoid contact with eyes, nose, or mouth. If no improvement within 2 weeks, consult your doctor.

Fluticasone Propionate binds to glucocorticoid receptors and reduces the activity of inflammatory cells and mediators, resulting in decreased skin inflammation and itching.

Adult Dose:

• Apply a thin film to the affected skin areas once or twice daily.
• Rub in gently.
• Reassess diagnosis if no improvements within 2 weeks.

Child Dose (>3 months):

• Apply a thin film to the affected skin areas once or twice daily.

Children under 3 months: Not recommended.

For external use only. Use in the dose and duration as advised by your doctor. Check the label for directions before use. Clean and dry the affected area and gently massage the cream. Wash your hands after applying, unless hands are the affected area.

If you miss a dose, apply it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and follow your regular schedule.

Common Side Effects:

• Burning sensation at application site
• Irritation
• Itching
• Redness

Precautions:

• Don't use it more often or for longer than advised.
• Don't apply to broken or infected areas of skin.
• Don't apply to face, eyes or eyelids.
• Don't cover the area with airtight dressings (may increase risk of side effects).
• If you think the area has become infected, stop using and consult your doctor.
• Consult your doctor if no improvement after 2 weeks.

Contraindications:

• Hypersensitivity
• Acne vulgaris
• Rosacea
• Perioral dermatitis
• Skin atrophy
• Primary cutaneous viral infections (herpes simplex, chicken pox)
• Primary fungal or bacterial skin infections

Drug Interactions:

• CYP3A4 inhibitors (e.g., ritonavir) may increase plasma concentrations of fluticasone.

Food Interactions: No interaction found/established.

Use in Pregnancy: May be unsafe during pregnancy. Animal studies have shown harmful effects. Your doctor will weigh the benefits and risks.

Use in Lactation: Probably safe during breastfeeding. Limited data suggests the drug does not represent any significant risk to the baby.

Pediatric Use: Dosage available for children over 3 months. Not recommended for children under 3 months.

Geriatric Use: No specific dosage adjustment is necessary for elderly patients.

Renal Impairment: No interaction found/established (minimal systemic absorption due to topical use).

Hepatic Impairment: No interaction found/established (minimal systemic absorption due to topical use).

Overdose: Overdose is unlikely when used as directed. Excessive use may cause skin irritation.

Storage: Store below 30°C, away from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
