Gentamicin 0.3% E/E prep

Introduction: Gentamicin 0.3% E/E prep is an antibiotic used to treat bacterial infections of the eye (eg. conjunctivitis) and ear (eg. otitis externa). It fights the infection by stopping the growth of bacteria.

How it works: Gentamicin is an aminoglycoside antibiotic that stops bacterial growth by preventing synthesis of essential proteins required by bacteria to carry out vital functions.

Important Information: For external use only (eye and ear). Complete the full course of treatment. It may cause short-term blurring of vision. Do not wear contact lenses. Use within 4 weeks of opening.

Aminoglycoside antibiotic

Gentamicin is an aminoglycoside antibiotic that binds to the 30S ribosomal subunit of susceptible bacteria, disrupting protein synthesis, thus rendering the bacterial cell membrane defective and stopping bacterial growth.

Gentamicin inhibits bacterial protein synthesis on the ribosome, thereby stopping bacterial growth and reproduction.

Adult Dose (Eye):

• Eye drops: Instill 1-2 drops into affected eye up to 6 times daily
• Severe infections: Initially 1-2 drops every 15 minutes, reducing frequency gradually
• Eye ointment: Place a small amount into the conjunctival sac 2-3 times daily

Adult Dose (Ear):

• Ear drops: Instill 2-3 drops in the affected ear 3-4 times a day and at night

Child Dose: Same as adult dose

For external use only (eye and ear). Take it in the dose and duration as advised by your doctor. Hold the dropper close to the eye/ear without touching it. Gently squeeze the dropper and place the medicine inside the lower eyelid or ear.

If you miss a dose, consult your doctor.

Common Side Effects:

• Temporary irritation in eye/ear
• Burning sensation

Precautions:

• Do not skip any doses and finish the full course of treatment.
• Avoid contamination - do not touch the tip to any surface.
• Wait for 5-10 minutes before delivering the next medication.
• Inform your doctor if no improvement within 2 days.
• Use within 4 weeks of opening the bottle.

Contraindications:

• History of hypersensitivity to aminoglycoside
• Pregnancy
• Hepatic impairment
• Perforated ear drum

Drug Interactions:

• Additive effect with other neurotoxic and nephrotoxic drugs
• Increased risk of ototoxicity with loop diuretics

Food Interactions: No interaction found/established.

Use in Pregnancy: Unsafe during pregnancy. There is definite evidence of risk to the developing baby.

Use in Lactation: Safe during breastfeeding. Studies suggest the drug does not pass into breastmilk in significant amount and is not harmful to the baby.

Pediatric Use: Dosage available for children (same as adult).

Geriatric Use: Use as per doctor's advice for elderly patients.

Renal & Hepatic Impairment: Contraindicated in hepatic impairment. Caution in kidney disease.

Overdose: Overdose is unlikely when used as directed. Excessive use may cause irritation.

Storage: Store below 30°C, away from light. Do not use more than 4 weeks after opening. Keep out of reach of children.
