Mechanism of action
Increases respiratory tract fluid, reducing mucus viscosity so it can be coughed up more easily.
Dosage
Adults: 200–400 mg every 4 hours, maximum 2400 mg/day. Children: lower, age-based dosing.
Administration
Take with plenty of water; good hydration aids mucus clearance.
Missed dose
Take when remembered; skip if the next dose is near.
Side effects
Nausea, vomiting, dizziness (uncommon); usually mild.
