Description
Introduction: Halobetasol Propionate 0.05% Topical is a super-high potency corticosteroid used for allergic disorders and inflammatory skin conditions. It provides relief from swelling, redness, and itching in the affected area.
How it works: Corticosteroids decrease inflammation by stabilizing leukocyte lysosomal membranes, preventing release of destructive acid hydrolases from leukocytes; inhibiting macrophage accumulation in inflamed areas; reducing capillary wall permeability and edema formation; decreasing complement components; antagonizing histamine activity and reducing fibroblast proliferation.
Important Information: Apply a thin layer to the affected area twice daily. Do not use longer than 2 consecutive weeks and do not exceed 50 g/week.

Pharmacology
Corticosteroids decrease inflammation by stabilizing leukocyte lysosomal membranes, preventing release of destructive acid hydrolases from leukocytes; inhibiting macrophage accumulation in inflamed areas; reducing leukocyte adhesion to capillary endothelium; reducing capillary wall permeability and edema formation; decreasing complement components; antagonizing histamine activity and release of kinin from substrates; reducing fibroblast proliferation, collagen deposition, and subsequent scar tissue formation.
Mechanism of action
Halobetasol Propionate reduces skin inflammation, redness and itching by inhibiting production of inflammatory mediators.
Dosage
Adult Dose:
- Apply topically to affected area(s) twice daily
- Not to exceed 50 g/week
- Do not use longer than 2 consecutive weeks
Child Dose (12 years):
- Apply topically to affected area(s) twice daily
- Not to exceed 50 g/week
- Do not use longer than 2 weeks

Administration
For external use only. Apply a thin layer to the affected area and rub in gently. Wash hands after applying, unless hands are the affected area. Avoid contact with eyes, nose and mouth.
Missed dose
If you miss a dose, apply it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and follow your regular schedule.
Side effects
Common Side Effects:
- Headache
- Application site pain
- Burning
- Dryness
- Itching
With prolonged use: Skin thinning, visible blood vessels, striae, telangiectasia
Precautions & warnings
Precautions:
- Don't use it more often or for longer than advised
- Don't cover the area with occlusive dressings (may increase risk of side effects)
- If infection occurs, stop using and consult doctor
- Consult doctor if no improvement after 2 weeks
- Inform doctor if mood changes or stomach problems occur

Renal / hepatic impairment
Renal & Hepatic Impairment: Minimal systemic absorption due to topical use - no known restrictions.
Overdose effects
Overdose: Prolonged excess use may suppress HPA axis - reduce or stop use.
