At a glance

Hartmann's Solution is an electrolyte and fluid replacer used for hypovolemia and dehydration.

Description

Introduction: Hartmann's Solution is a sterile electrolyte solution containing Sodium Chloride, Potassium Chloride, Calcium Chloride and Sodium Lactate. It is used to treat hypovolemia caused by surgery, hemorrhage and trauma, and dehydration.

How it works: This solution restores fluid and electrolyte balance, increases blood volume and helps treat metabolic acidosis associated with dehydration.

Important Information: The volume and rate of infusion depend on the patient's age, weight and clinical condition. For burn patients, the Parkland formula is used.

Indications
  • Hypovolemia: caused by surgery, hemorrhage and trauma
  • Dehydration: due to excessive sweating, severe diarrhea or vomiting, excess fluid loss by kidneys
  • Plasma loss: caused by intestinal obstruction, burns or denuding skin conditions
