At a glance

Iron Polymaltose Complex syrup is used for the treatment of latent iron deficiency and iron deficiency anaemia including macrocytic anaemia, nutritional anaemia of infants, anaemia due to excessive haemorrhage and anaemia associated with infections and malignant disease.

Description

Iron Polymaltose Complex is a polysaccharide-iron complex, which is a novel iron preparation used in the treatment of iron deficiency anaemia. It contains non-ionic ferric iron and polymaltose in a stable complex that facilitates controlled absorption of ferric iron when it comes in contact with mucosal cell surface. Being non-ionic, it does not interact with food components and other medications, so bioavailability is not decreased.

Indications
  • Latent iron deficiency
  • Iron deficiency anaemia (macrocytic anaemia, nutritional anaemia of infants, anaemia due to excessive haemorrhage, anaemia associated with infections and malignant disease)
  • Prevention and treatment of iron deficiency anaemia before, during and after pregnancy and during lactation

  • Caution in hypersensitivity to iron or any other ingredients
Contraindications

Contraindications:

  • Haemochromatosis, thalassemia or haemosiderosis
  • Hypersensitivity to iron or any other ingredients
Drug interactions

Generally no interactions have been observed; since iron is complex bound, ionic interactions with foodstuff components (phytates, oxalates, tannin) and concomitantly administered medicaments (tetracycline, antacids) are unlikely.

Food interactions

No food interaction found/established.

Use in pregnancy

Use in Pregnancy: Administration during first trimester requires careful assessment of potential risk versus benefits; should not be administered unless clearly indicated; iron therapy may be indicated for remainder of pregnancy on physician advice.
