Linezolid

Linezolid is an antibiotic medicine used in the treatment of severe bacterial infections. It is used to treat infections of lungs (Pneumonia), skin and soft tissues. Linezolid may be taken with or without food, preferably at a fixed time. You should take it regularly as per the schedule prescribed by your doctor. Taking it at the same time every day will help you to remember to take it. Do not stop taking it until you have finished the complete course, even when you feel better. If you stop taking this medicine too early then infection may return or worsen. The most common side effects of Linezolid include vomiting, headache, nausea, decreased blood cell counts and diarrhea. These are usually mild but let your doctor know if they bother you or last more than a few days. Before using it, you should tell your doctor if you are allergic to any antibiotics or have any kidney or liver problems. You should also let your doctor know all other medicines you are taking as they may affect, or be affected by this medicine. Pregnant and breastfeeding mothers should consult their doctor before using it. Linezolid is an antibiotic. It stops bacterial growth by preventing synthesis of essential proteins required by bacteria to carry out vital functions.

• Severe bacterial infections

Linezolid is a bacteriostatic oxazolidinone which acts by inhibiting ribosomal protein synthesis. It is active against gm+ve bacteria including vancomycin-resistant enterococci and MRSA. It has limited in vitro activity against gm-ve bacteria.

Adult Dose: Oral Uncomplicated skin and skin structure infections Adult: 400 mg 12 hrly for 10-14 days. Vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus faecium Adult: 600 mg 12 hrly for 14-28 days. Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus infections Adult: 600 mg bid for 7-21 days. Community-acquired pneumonia; Nosocomial pneumonia; Complicated skin and skin structure infections Adult: 600 mg 12 hrly for 10-14 days. Elderly: No dosage adjustment needed. Hepatic impairment: Mild to moderate: No dosage adjustment needed. Child Dose: Oral For Pediatric Patients Pneumonia, complicated skin infections, vancomycin resistant enterococci: Birth–11 y: 30 mg/kg/day q8h >11 y: 1,200 mg/day q12h Uncomplicated skin infections: Birth–5 y: 30 mg/kg/day q8h 5–11 y: 20 mg/kg/day q12h >11–18 y: 1,200 mg/day q12h Renal Dose: Renal impairment: No dosage adjustment needed.

Take this medicine in the dose and duration as advised by your doctor. Swallow it as a whole. Do not chew, crush or break it. Linezolid may be taken with or without food, but it is better to take it at a fixed time. Avoid Linezolid with tyramine-rich food such as cheese, smoked fish, meats and some types of beer.

[UNSAFE] Linezolid may decrease alertness, affect your vision or make you feel sleepy and dizzy. Do not drive if these symptoms occur. Linezolid treats serious infections caused by certain types of bacteria. Take it with food to avoid an upset stomach. Do not skip any doses and finish the full course of treatment even if you feel better. Stopping it early may make the infection to come back and harder to treat. Diarrhea may occur as a side effect but should stop when your course is complete. Inform your doctor if it doesn't stop or if you find blood in your stools. Avoid taking excessive cheese, processed meats, alcohol, or soy sauce while taking this medication as these may cause an excessive rise in your blood pressure. Inform your doctor if you develop fever, shortness of breath, or any changes in your vision. Do not take it for more than 14 days without consulting your doctor.

Linzolid formulations are contraindicated for use in patients who have known hypersensitivity to Linzolid or any of the other product components. Linzolid should not be used in patients taking any medicinal product which inhibits monoamine oxidases A or B (e.g. phenelzine, isocarboxazid) or within two weeks of taking any such medicinal product. Linzolid should not be administered to patients with uncontrolled hypertension, pheochromocytoma, thyrotoxicosis, carcinoid syndrome and/or patients taking directly and indirectly acting sympathomimetic agents (e.g. pseudoephedrine), vasopressive agents (e.g. epinephrine, norepinephrine), dopaminergic agents (e.g. dopamine, dobutamine), serotonin re-uptake inhibitors, tricyclic antidepressants, serotonin 5-HT1 receptor agonists (triptans), meperidine or buspirone.

May reduce serum levels w/ rifampicin and phenytoin. May cause hypoglycaemia w/ insulin or oral antidiabetics. May increase risk of seizures w/ tramadol. Potentially Fatal: Increased risk of serotonin syndrome w/ MAOIs, TCAs, SNRIs, or other serotonergic drugs (e.g. bupropion, vilazodone, mirtazapine, amoxapine, buspirone, maprotiline, meperidine, trazodone, nefazodone). Significant increase in BP w/ vasopressive agents (e.g. epinephrine, norepinephrine), sympathomimetic agents (e.g. pseudoephedrine) and dopaminergic agents (e.g. dopamine, dobutamine).

[UNSAFE] It is unsafe to consume alcohol with Linezolid.

[CONSULT YOUR DOCTOR] Linezolid may be unsafe to use during pregnancy. Although there are limited studies in humans, animal studies have shown harmful effects on the developing baby. Your doctor will weigh the benefits and any potential risks before prescribing it to you. Please consult your doctor.

[CONSULT YOUR DOCTOR] Linezolid is probably unsafe to use during breastfeeding. Limited human data suggests that the drug may pass into the breastmilk and harm the baby.

[SAFE IF PRESCRIBED] Linezolid is safe to use in patients with kidney disease. No dose adjustment of Linezolid is recommended. However, talk to your doctor if you have any underlying kidney disease. [CAUTION] Linezolid should be used with caution in patients with severe liver disease. Dose adjustment of Linezolid may be needed. Please consult your doctor. Limited information is available on the use of Linezolid in these patients. No dose adjustment is recommended in patients with mild to moderate liver disease.
