Liraglutide is a medicine used to lower blood sugar levels in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus. This helps to prevent serious complications of diabetes like kidney damage and blindness. Proper control of diabetes also helps to lower your chances of a heart attack or a stroke. Liraglutide belongs to the GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide) group of diabetes medicines. It works by helping your body produce insulin and by reducing appetite. It also helps to reduce weight in some people. This medicine should be stored in a refrigerator until you need it but do not freeze it. It is normally injected under the skin once daily. The dose will depend on your condition and what other diabetes medicines you are taking. You can use it at any time of the day with or without food but try to use it on the same time each day to get the most benefit. Your doctor or nurse will show you how and where to inject the medicine. Follow the instructions carefully. Do not stop taking this medicine without talking to your doctor. If you do, your blood sugar levels may increase and put you at risk of serious complications. Remember that it is only part of a treatment program that should also include a healthy diet and regular exercise as advised by your doctor. Your lifestyle plays a big part in controlling diabetes. The most common side effects of this medicine include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and decreased appetite. It can also lead to low blood sugar levels (hypoglycemia) especially if you are also taking other medicines like insulin or sulphonylureas for treatment of diabetes. To prevent this, it is important to have regular meals and always carry a fast-acting source of glucose such as sugary candy or glucose candy with you. Before using it, let your doctor know if you have any pancreas or stomach problems or severe dehydration (loss of body water) or diabetic ketoacidosis (a complication of diabetes characterised by too much acid and ketones in your blood). Adult Dose: Subcutaneous Adjunct to Type 2 diabetes mellitus Adult: Initially, 0.6 mg/day may increase to 1.2 mg/day after 1 wk; and a further increase to 1.8 mg/day after 1 wk if glycaemic control is not optimal. Initial dose of 0.6 mg SC qDay is only to decrease GI adverse effects and does not provide glycemic control. When initiating , consider reducing the dose of concomitantly administered insulin secretagogues (such as sulfonylureas) to reduce the risk of hypoglycemia Hepatic Impairment: No dosage adjustment needed. Child Dose: <18 years: Safety and efficacy not established Renal Dose: Renal Impairment No dosage adjustment needed.

If you miss a dose of Liraglutide, take it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular schedule. Do not double the dose.

[SAFE] Liraglutide does not usually affect your ability to drive. Victoza Solution for Injection should be injected under the skin of your abdomen or thigh at the same time everyday. Do not administer intravenously or intramuscularly. Store the pen in the refrigerator. When refrigeration is not possible, you can also keep your pen at room temperature (less than 30°C) for up to 2 weeks. Do not freeze it. Victoza Solution for Injection may cause nausea. To avoid it, eat smaller meals, limit fatty food intake and stop eating when you feel full. Notify your doctor immediately if you have severe and/or persistent upper abdominal pain and vomiting.

Do not use in patients with a prior serious hypersensitivity reaction to any of the product components. Type 1 DM, diabetic ketoacidosis. Severe renal impairment & end-stage renal disease. Pregnancy & lactation. Contraindicated in patients with personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC) or in patients with multiple endocrine neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN 2)

Oral Contraceptives: Liraglutide lowered ethinyloestradiol and levonorgestrel Cmax by 12% and 13%, respectively, following administration of a single dose of an oral contraceptive product. Tmax was delayed by 1.5 hrs with liraglutide for both compounds. There was no clinically relevant effect on the overall exposure of either ethinyloestradiol or levonorgestrel. The contraceptive effect is therefore anticipated to be unaffected when co-administered with liraglutide. Increased risk of hypoglycaemia when used w/ insulin secretagogues (e.g. sulfonylurea, meglitinide). May affect absorption of concomitantly administered oral drugs due to slow gastric emptying. Insulin: Combination of Liraglutide with insulin has not been evaluated.
