Description

Metronidazole + Miconazole Nitrate combines two medicines: Miconazole (antifungal) stops fungal growth and Metronidazole (antibiotic) kills bacteria by damaging DNA.

Pharmacology

Metronidazole is converted to reduction products that interact with DNA causing destruction of helical DNA structure. Miconazole inhibits ergosterol synthesis damaging fungal cell wall membrane.

Mechanism of action

Stops the growth of infection-causing microorganisms.

Dosage

Adult Dose (Vaginal Tablet):

  • Trichomoniasis: 1 vaginal tablet daily (at bedtime) for 10 days
  • Candidiasis: 1 vaginal tablet daily (at bedtime) for 10 days
Administration
  • For external use only
  • Insert high up into the vagina (at bedtime)
  • Wash hands before and after application

Drug interactions

Metronidazole: Disulfiram-like reaction with alcohol, increased oral anticoagulant effect, increased phenytoin levels.

Miconazole: Increased bleeding risk with warfarin, increased toxicity of phenytoin and cyclosporine.
