Mupirocin Calcium nasal prep is an antibiotic nasal ointment used for eradication of nasal colonization with methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA).
Description
Mupirocin Calcium works by inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis. It reversibly and specifically binds to bacterial isoleucyl-transfer RNA (tRNA) synthetase to inhibit protein synthesis. It is bactericidal at concentrations achieved by topical intranasal administration.
Indications
- Eradication of nasal colonization with methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA)

Pharmacology
Mupirocin Calcium binds to bacterial isoleucyl-transfer RNA (tRNA) synthetase to inhibit protein synthesis, resulting in bacterial cell death.
Mechanism of action
Eradicates MRSA nasal colonization.
Dosage
Adult Dose (Nasal):
- 2% nasal ointment: Apply into each nostril 2-3 times daily for max 5 days
- After application, press sides of nose together and gently massage for approx 1 min
Pediatric Dose (Nasal):
- >12 years: Apply into each nostril 2-3 times daily for max 5 days
Administration
- For nasal use only
- Apply small amount into each nostril
- Press and massage after application
- Avoid contact with eyes
Missed dose
If you miss a dose, apply it as soon as you remember; skip if it's almost time for next dose; do not double the dose.
Side effects

- Application site burning
- Application site redness
- Application site itching
- Application site irritation

- Do not use for more than 5 days
- Avoid contact with eyes
