Description
Naproxen is a propionic acid derivative NSAID that inhibits COX-1 and COX-2 enzymes to reduce prostaglandin synthesis. It inhibits platelet aggregation and has anti-inflammatory, analgesic and antipyretic actions. Topical application provides local pain and inflammation relief.

Pharmacology
Naproxen inhibits COX-1 and COX-2 enzymes to reduce prostaglandin synthesis, thereby reducing pain and inflammation. Topical application provides local action.
Mechanism of action
Relieves local pain and inflammation by inhibiting prostaglandin synthesis.
Dosage
Adult Dose (Topical):
- Apply 2-6 times daily as required
- Massage a thin layer into affected area
Administration
- For external use only
- Clean and dry affected area before application
- Wash hands after applying (unless hands are affected area)
- Avoid contact with eyes, mouth and nose
- Do not use on broken, infected or inflamed skin
Missed dose
If you miss a dose, apply it as soon as you remember; skip if it's almost time for next dose; do not double the dose.
Side effects
Side Effects:
- No common side effects seen
- Burning sensation or skin irritation at application site (rare)
Precautions & warnings
- Do not use on broken, infected, inflamed or irritated skin
- Do not use on open wounds
- Do not wash treated area immediately after application
- Avoid using other products at the same time
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity
- Aspirin or NSAID allergy
- Perioperative pain in CABG surgery
- Pregnancy (3rd trimester)
Drug interactions
- May enhance methotrexate toxicity
- Reduced BP response to ACE inhibitors
- Increased risk of GI events with aspirin
- Increased risk of GI bleeding with warfarin
- May reduce diuretic efficacy
- May increase serum lithium concentrations
Food interactions
No food interactions (topical use).
Use in pregnancy
Use in Pregnancy: Naproxen topical may be unsafe during pregnancy; animal studies show evidence of fetal harm. Not recommended in third trimester.
Pregnancy Category: C — always consult a doctor before taking during pregnancy.
Use in lactation
Use in Lactation: Naproxen topical is safe during breastfeeding; not significantly excreted in breast milk.
Pediatric use
Safety not established in children.
Geriatric use
Elderly may require dose adjustment.
Renal / hepatic impairment
Renal Impairment: Caution in kidney disease; dose adjustment may be needed.
Hepatic Impairment: Caution in liver disease; dose adjustment may be needed.
Overdose effects
Overdose unlikely (topical use); symptomatic treatment.
