Description
Oxyphencyclimine is a tertiary amine antimuscarinic. It blocks all three types of muscarinic receptors and inhibits vagally mediated reflexes by antagonising the action of acetylcholine.

- Peptic ulcer disease
- Smooth muscle spasms in gastrointestinal disorders

Pharmacology
Oxyphencyclimine blocks all three types of muscarinic receptors to antagonize acetylcholine action, relaxing smooth muscle and relieving GI spasm.
Mechanism of action
Relieves smooth muscle spasm by blocking muscarinic receptors.
Dosage
Adult Dose (Oral):
- Peptic ulcer: 5-10 mg twice or three times daily
Administration
- Swallow tablet whole
- Take at the same time each day
Missed dose
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember; skip if it's almost time for next dose; do not double the dose.
Side effects
Common Side Effects:
- Xerostomia (dry mouth)
- Decreased sweating
- Urinary hesitancy and retention
- Blurred vision
- Cycloplegia
- Increased ocular tension
- Loss of taste
- Headache
- Nervousness
- Mental confusion
- Impotence
- Suppression of lactation
- Urticaria
- Constipation
Precautions & warnings
- Caution in elderly; autonomic neuropathy; hepatic or renal disease; hyperthyroidism, CHF, thyrotoxicosis, MI, tachyarrhythmias, hypertension, prostatic hypertrophy; hiatal hernia
- May impair ability to drive or operate machinery
- Caution during pregnancy and lactation
Contraindications
- Closed-angle glaucoma
- Obstructive uropathy
- GI obstruction, paralytic ileus, intestinal atony
- Ulcerative colitis
- Toxic megacolon
- Myasthenia gravis
Drug interactions
- Enhanced effect with concurrent admin of other drugs with antimuscarinic properties and MAOIs
- May affect absorption of other drugs
- Antagonistic effect with parasympathomimetics
Food interactions
Take with food for better absorption.
Use in pregnancy
Use in Pregnancy: Oxyphencyclimine may be unsafe during pregnancy; animal studies show adverse effects.
