Oxyphenonium Bromide 1% Eye prep is an anticholinergic used for pupil dilatation. It blocks muscarinic receptors to relax the iris sphincter muscle and dilate the pupil.

Description

Oxyphenonium is an anticholinergic drug that inhibits muscarinic (cholinergic) receptors on smooth muscles and cardiac muscles to prevent the effect of acetylcholine. It does not cross the BBB and does not produce CNS effects.

Pharmacology

Oxyphenonium blocks muscarinic receptors of the iris sphincter muscle to cause pupil dilatation.

Mechanism of action

Dilates the pupil by relaxing the iris sphincter muscle.

Dosage

Adult Dose (Eye Drops):

  • 1-2 drops as required
Administration
  • For ophthalmic use only
  • Do not touch dropper tip to eye
Missed dose

If you miss a dose, use it as soon as you remember; skip if it's almost time for next dose; do not double the dose.

  • Caution in patients with history of high blood pressure, increased eye pressure, elderly, children, during pregnancy and breastfeeding
