Pelargonium Sidoides is an herbal medicine used for symptoms of upper respiratory tract infections including common cold, cough, blocked or runny nose, sore throat, rhinosinusitis, tonsillopharyngitis, and acute and chronic bronchitis.

Description

A standardized extract of Pelargonium sidoides was registered in 2005 by the German Federal Institute for Drugs and Medical Devices for acute bronchitis. Several randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trials support the efficacy and safety of Pelargonium sidoides for the treatment of acute bronchitis in adults and children. The European Medicines Agency (EMA) also recommends Pelargonium for the treatment of common cold symptoms.

Pharmacology

Pelargonium sidoides extract shows growth inhibitory effect against several bacterial strains (Klebsiella pneumoniae, E. coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Proteus mirabilis, Staphylococcus aureus). It completely suppresses replication of Influenza A virus (H1N1, H3N2), Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV), Rhinovirus, Coronavirus, Parainfluenza virus, and Coxsackie virus. It inhibits pathogen-host cell interaction, increases ciliary beat frequency, and boosts the immune system through macrophage activation.

Mechanism of action

Inhibits viral and bacterial pathogen growth, thins and loosens airway mucus, and stimulates the immune system through macrophage activation.

Dosage

Tablet Dosage:

  • Adults & >12 years: 1 tablet 3 times daily
  • 6-12 years: 1 tablet 2 times daily

Syrup Dosage:

  • Adults & >12 years: 7.5 mL 3 times daily
  • 6-11 years: 5 mL 3 times daily
  • 1-5 years: 2.5 mL 3 times daily
Administration
  • Follow the prescribed dosage
  • Take at the same time each day
  • Follow the duration as advised by your doctor
Missed dose

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember; skip if it's almost time for next dose; do not double the dose.
