Description
Povidone-iodine is an iodophore with powerful broad-spectrum germicidal activity against bacteria, viruses, fungi, protozoa, and spores. It oxidizes cell constituents and iodinates proteins, inactivating them. The 10% formulation is effective for treatment of skin and mucous membrane infections.
Indications
- Treatment and prevention of wound infections

Pharmacology
Povidone-iodine slowly releases elemental iodine, providing prolonged germicidal activity. The 10% formulation is effective against a broad range of microorganisms on skin and mucous membranes and helps prevent infections.
Mechanism of action
Prevents infection by killing harmful microorganisms.
Dosage
Adult Dose (Topical):
- Wound infection: Apply full strength as often as required as a paint or wet soak
- Minor wounds: Apply directly to affected area; may be covered with gauze or adhesive bandage
- Vaginal candidiasis: 5 gm of 10% gel (one applicator full) every night for up to 14 days

- May be covered with dressing or bandage if needed
Missed dose
If you miss a dose, apply it as soon as you remember; skip if it's almost time for next application; do not double the dose.

Precautions & warnings
- For deep or puncture wounds or serious burns, consult a physician
- If redness, irritation, swelling, or pain persists or infection occurs, discontinue use
- Avoid prolonged use in patients with thyroid disorders or on lithium therapy

- Hypersensitivity to povidone iodine or any ingredient
- Prolonged use in thyroid disorders
- Lithium therapy
Drug interactions
- Concurrent use with lithium therapy may exhibit hypothyroid effect
